Excerpt from A Brief History of the Indian Peoples How Hinduism, while sufficing to organize the Indian communities into a social and religious confederacy, failed to knit them together into a coherent nation. Bengal was destined, by her position, to receive the human overflow from the ancient breeding-grounds of Central Asia. Waves of conquest from the north were as inevitable in early times, as are the tidal waves from the ocean at the present day. But such conquests, although rapid, were never enduring; and although wide-spread, were never complete. The religious and social organization of Hinduism never succumbed. The greatest of India's conquerors, the Mughals, were being crushed by Hindu confederacies before their supremacy had lasted 130 years. So far as can now be estimated, the advance of the British power alone saved the Delhi Empire from dismemberment by the Hindu Marhattas, Rajputs, and Sikhs. The British Rule has endured, because it is wielded in the joint interest of all the Indian races. But while these thoughts have long been present in my mind, I have tried not to obtrude them on my pages. For I hope that this little book will reach the hands of many young people who look on history merely as a record of facts, and not as a compendium of philosophy. The greatest service which an Indian historian can render at present to India, is to state the actual facts in such a way that they will be read. If my story is found to combine truth with simplicity, it will have attained all that I aimed at. If it teaches young Englishmen and young natives of India to think more kindly of each other, I shall esteem myself richly rewarded. Excerpt from India, Vol. 5 More than eighty-five thousand copies of twenty-two English editions of the Brief History were published during the author's life, and a twenty-third edition prepared by the Rev. W. H. Hutton bears the date 1903. Several translations of the little book have been made, including versions in some of the languages of India. It has been widely used as a text-book in India, and since 1886 has been required for entrance examination by the Calcutta University. Such evidences of the authoritative character and the popularity of the Brief History are surely a full warrant for the selection of it as one of the volumes of the history OF nations. Sir William Hunter may be allowed in the words of the preface to the first edition to tell the aims of his book: In this book I try to exhibit the growth of the Indian peoples, to show what part they have played in the world's progress, and what sufferings they have endured from other nations. Short Indian histories, as written by Englishmen, usually dismiss the first two thousand years of their narrative in a few pages, and start by disclosing India as a conquered country. This plan is not good, either for Europeans in India or for the Indians themselves; nor does it accord with the facts. As long as Indian history is presented to the Indian youth as nothing but a dreary record of disunion and subjection, our anglo-indian schools can scarcely become the nurseries of a self-respecting nation. I have there fore tried to put together, from original sources, a brief narrative of what I believe to be the true history of the peoples of India. These sources have been carefully examined in my larger works. This little book merely states, without discussing, the results arrived at by the labor of thirty years. Many Indian topics are still Open questions, with regard to which divergences of opinion may fairly exist. In some cases, I have been compelled by brevity to state my conclu sions without setting forth the evidence on which they rest, and without any attempt to combat alternative views. In other matters, I have had to content myself with conveying a correct general impression, while omitting the modifying details. For I here endeavour to present an account, which shall be at once original and com plete, of a continent inhabited by many more races and nations than Europe, in every stage of human develop ment, from the polyandric tribes and hunting hamlets of the hill jungles, to the most complex commercial communities in the world. When I have had to expose old fables, or to substitute truth for long accepted errors, I clearly show my grounds for doing so. Thus, in setting aside the legend of Mahmud the idol-breaker, I trace back the growth of the myth through the Persian Historians, to the contemporary narrative of Al Biruni (970 - 1029 The calumnies against Jagannath are corrected by the testimony of three centuries, from I 580, when Abul Fazl wrote, down to the police reports of 1870. Macaulay's somewhat fanciful story of Plassey has been told afresh in the words of Clive's own despatch.
