Sogenannte directories – gedruckte Aufstellungen der Gewerbetreibenden einer Stadt, die oft kombiniert waren mit Reiseführer-ähnlichen Inhalten – avancierten in England ab dem 18. Jahrhundert zu populären Medien. In einer Phase rasanter Urbanisierung erfüllten sie vielfältige Funktionen für die Orientierung in städtischen Räumen, die Strukturierung von Kommunikation und die Organisation von Wissen. Dennoch hat diese Mediengattung in der historischen Forschung bisher nur wenig Beachtung erfahren. Das Buch schließt diese Forschungslücke, indem es untersucht, welchen Beitrag die directories dazu leisteten, Stadträume entzifferbar und navigierbar zu machen, sie zu deuten und mitzugestalten. Es eröffnet einen facettenreichen Blick auf das komplexe Verhältnis zwischen Medien und städtischem (Er)Leben sowie auf die Wahrnehmung und Aneignung von Räumen.
