The fields of computer-assisted instruction and intelligent tutoring systems have had few vehicles for sharing ideas or programs. Different backgrounds and settings meant reading different journals and attending different conferences. The purpose of this book is to foster a mutual understanding of shared issues and contemporary approaches so as to further powerful educational applications of computing. It is unique in drawing on both the intelligent tutoring systems and computer assisted instruction communities. Each chapter provides an in-depth discussion by leaders in these fields of current work, focusing on instructional programs -- their design, use, and evaluation. The editors and authors have made extensive efforts to ensure each chapter's clarity and readability for both communities.

Three experiments were run using the SCHOLAR CAI system to teach geography to high-school students. The experiments compared a method of teaching derived from analysis of human tutors (Tutorial Mode) vs. a method derived from programmed instruction (Block-Test Mode). In the three experiments, Block-Test Mode was systematically converged toward Tutorial Mode in order to pinpoint what aspects of teaching strategy affected student's learning. Tutorial Mode was significantly more effective in the first two experiments, and nonsignificantly in the third. (Modified author abstract).

This volume presents a theoretical framework and background for designing computer-assisted instruction (CAI). Its goal is to synthesize theoretical and applied research in CAI-relevant fields including theories of learning and instruction, systems for instructional design, and experience with CAI. Building on this knowledge, the book shows how computer technology interacts with instruction to influence the design of effective lessons. Designers, practitioners, and students of CAI and computer-based training (CBT) should find this text very helpful in developing a better understanding of the potential and limitations of computers as tutors.
