Computer-Aided Processes in Instruction and Research focuses on the use of computers in instruction and research. Topics covered include computer-aided data acquisition and instruction; computer-aided drafting with interface for finite element mesh generation; the use of microcomputers in mechanical engineering education; and microcomputer-aided structural analysis. Computer-aided learning in problem-oriented courses is also discussed, together with the synthesis of electronics education through introductory robotics. This book is comprised of 24 chapters and begins with a discussion on the course content and the use of computer performance software by students during the design process. The following chapters explore the development of microcomputer-aided mechanical engineering software at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; the data acquisition process and relevant laboratory exercises, as well as the uncertainties associated with measurements involving digital systems; and intelligent computer-aided instruction. Some of the problems that arise in the process of developing a computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing/computer-aided engineering curriculum in a school of engineering are highlighted. The final chapter features the Robotics Application Laboratory within the Engineering Technology Department of Texas A&M University. This monograph will be of value to students, educators, administrators, and other professionals interested in computer-assisted instruction and research.

This document contains a series of papers which attempt to de-mystify the subject of artificial intelligence and to show how some countries in the European Community (EC) are approaching the promotion of development and application of artificial intelligence systems that can be used as an aid in vocational training programs, as well as to stimulate discussion and an exchange of information throughout the EC. The six papers included in the report are "Artificial Intelligence and Training--An Initial Assessment" (I. Aleksander); "Artificial Intelligence and Education--Some Lines of Reflection" (M. Vivet); "Expert Systems in Training" (D. Kerr); "Artificial Intelligence Applications to Learning" (J. Gillingham); "Modeling an Automatic Tutor by Dynamic Planning--An Automatic Tutor Integrated in an Intelligent Computer-Aided Instruction System" (M. Fernandez de Castro, A. Sanchez, and M. Maillo); and "Tutorial Expert Systems Project" (P. Lees). (KC)

This collection of papers is the result of a symposium sponsored by NATO's Defense Research Group Panel VIII in the Spring of 1985. The symposium came into being when it became obvious to the NATO countries that research, development and utilization of advanced technologies for training was the best means of increasing both training effectiveness and efficiency. This symposium was the second in a series of three devoted to training. The series was structured to cover all aspects of training. The first series addressed the value of training, the second one dealt with the application of training technologies and the third and last of the series focused on academic issues concerned with the effect of prior learning on subsequent learning. The fact that a major American publisher has determined that computer based instruction is the technology of greatest interest to the NATO community is not surprising. Advances in microprocessor technology have revolutionized both how and where we train. During this symposium there were a limited number of carefully chosen exhibits to demonstrate the various applications of computer based training techniques. In the following papers you will find both a practical and scientific basis for the way current and future training and training systems should be designed, applied and utilized. We know that training must be done faster and more effectively.
