This brief, evidence-based guide is ideal for busy mental health professionals helping clients with opioid use disorders (OUDs). It examines the devastating global impact caused by opioids and is replete with information and resources that can be immediately applied to addiction work. The authors’ pragmatic, strengths-based approach to treatment is based on a collaborative counselor-client working alliance to achieve client readiness for change, moderation, and abstinence. Topics discussed include current research on risk and protective factors, OUD assessment and diagnosis, the ethical and legal issues particular to addiction work, medication-assisted treatment, physical and psychological interventions for pain management, and the necessity of interdisciplinary care. In addition, Drs. Alderson and Gladding provide a number of counseling approaches and treatment options that consider work with women, youth, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, veterans, older adults, people with disabilities, individuals in the criminal justice system, and rural residents. Five useful appendices conclude the book, including a listing of 20 opioid drugs in descending order of potency; common ICD-10, ICD-10-CM, and ICD-11 codes; and a glossary of terms and abbreviations. About the Authors Kevin G. Alderson, PhD, is professor emeritus of counseling psychology from the University of Calgary. He is an editorial board member of the Journal of Alcoholism, Drug Abuse & Substance Dependence and the Austin Journal of Drug Abuse and Addiction, as well as the editor of the Canadian Journal of Counselling and Psychotherapy. Samuel T. Gladding, PhD, is a professor in the Department of Counseling at Wake Forest University and the author of numerous, best selling counseling texts. *Requests for digital versions from ACA can be found on www.wiley.com. *To purchase print copies, please visit the ACA website here *Reproduction requests for material from books published by ACA should be directed to [email protected]

"Before you is the book you have been waiting for concerning opioid addiction. It is a "cut-to-the-chase," concise guide for counselors, psychologists, and other mental health professionals. For brevity, we will refer to all mental health professionals in this book as counselors. We believe it is important to note from the onset that the gold standard in helping individuals with opioid use disorders is medication-assisted treatments (MATs), which is the subject of Chapter 6. This does not mean that every client will need to start taking a MAT, but because opioids are the most addictive class of drugs that exist, many if not most opioid-addicted individuals will find that MAT is needed, at least early on in their recovery. Given that counselors are unqualified to administer medications, it will likely be necessary for counselors to work in consort with physicians and other medical personnel to provide appropriate care to individuals with OUDs. Interdisciplinary care is the norm for working with opioid-addicted individuals and not the exception. This book is intended for all counselors, regardless of specialization. Addictions and mental health issues often co-exist, so to work with one issue requires that you work with the other as well. All of us need to be aware of the devastating and global impact caused by opioids. This concise guide will also be a good read for those struggling with opioid use or addiction right now, and others who care about them. Although the crisis is huge, this book is small. Our hope is that it can be read in one or two evenings. We know that expectations on today's counselor is growing, and that the job is stressful. Silva's (2020) dissertation found that in her purposive sample of 331 experienced counselors (272 women, 56 men; 2 to 30 years of experience), many reported (a) having poor work-life balance, (b) paying insufficient attention to their personal lives, (c) experiencing diminished quality of relationships, (d) working in negative environments, and (f) feeling low levels of self-compassion"--

Opioid Therapy In The 21st Century written by Howard S. Smith and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-02-21 with Medical categories.

Over the last thirty years, the concern of Pain Medicine practitioners about the potential for their patients to develop a dependence on opioids has left opioid therapy as a largely underutilized treatment. While there is no simple answer to chronic pain, opioids remain the only class of drugs capable of providing relief to patients experiencing serious pain. Opioid Therapy in the 21st Century, Second Edition fills a dearth of clinical knowledge about analgesics to aid practitioners in weighing the risks versus the benefits of opioid therapy for their chronic pain patients. Part of the Oxford American Pain Library, this concise guide serves as a practical, user-friendly reference for physicians across the range of primary care and medical specialties. It includes an overview of appropriate clinical applications of opioids, covering such topics as opioid pharmacology, route selection, and individualization of therapy, as well as strategies for managing and mitigating the risk of abuse, addiction, and diversion. There are also special sections dedicated to the unique needs of pediatric, geriatric, and palliative care patient populations. This second edition discusses opioids approved for use since publication of the first edition, such as Butrans (buprenorphine patch); fentanyl patch and nasal spray; abuse resistant version of Oxycontin; and Embeda (morphine sulfate). Approved indications for older opioids as well as clinical trial information have also been updated.
