The student of calculus is entitled to ask what calculus is and what it can be used for. This short book provides an answer. The author starts by demonstrating that calculus provides a mathematical tool for the quantitative analysis of a wide range of dynamical phenomena and systems with variable quantities. He then looks at the origins and intuitive sources of calculus, its fundamental methodology, and its general framework and basic structure, before examining a few typical applications. The author's style is direct and pedagogical. The new student should find that the book provides a clear and strong grounding in this important technique.

Introduction To The Mathematics Of Variation written by Taha Sochi and has been published by Taha Sochi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-08-16 with Mathematics categories.
This book is about the calculus of variations which is a subject concerned mainly with optimization of functionals. However, because part of it is based on using ordinary calculus in solving optimization problems, "Calculus of Variations" in its original title is modified to become “Mathematics of Variation”. In fact, the book is essentially a collection of solved problems with rather modest theoretical background and hence it is based on the method of "learning by example and practice" which in our view is the most effective way for learning mathematics and overcoming its difficulties. The main merit of the book is its clarity, intuitive structure and rather inclusiveness as it includes the main topics and applications of this subject. The materials in this book require decent background in general mathematics (mostly in single-variable and multi-variable differential and integral calculus). The book can be used as a text or as a reference for an introductory course on this subject as part of an undergraduate curriculum in physics or engineering or applied mathematics. The book can also be used as a source of supplementary pedagogical materials used in tutorial sessions associated with such a course.

Offering a new perspective, this textbook demystifies the operation of electric machines by providing an integrated understanding of electromagnetic fields, electric circuits, numerical analysis, and computer programming. It presents fundamental concepts in a rigorous manner, emphasising underlying physical modelling assumptions and limitations, and provides detailed explanations of how to implement the finite element method to explore these concepts using Python. It includes explanations of the conversion of concepts into algorithms, and algorithms into code, and examples building in complexity, from simple linear-motion electromagnets to rotating machines. Over 100 theoretical and computational end-of-chapter exercises test understanding, with solutions for instructors and downloadable Python code available online. Ideal for graduates and senior undergraduates studying electric machines, electric machine design and control, and power electronic converters and power systems engineering, this textbook is also a solid reference for engineers interested in understanding, analysing and designing electric motors, generators, and transformers.

Optimal Control Theory written by Zhongjing Ma and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-01-30 with Technology & Engineering categories.
This book focuses on how to implement optimal control problems via the variational method. It studies how to implement the extrema of functional by applying the variational method and covers the extrema of functional with different boundary conditions, involving multiple functions and with certain constraints etc. It gives the necessary and sufficient condition for the (continuous-time) optimal control solution via the variational method, solves the optimal control problems with different boundary conditions, analyzes the linear quadratic regulator & tracking problems respectively in detail, and provides the solution of optimal control problems with state constraints by applying the Pontryagin’s minimum principle which is developed based upon the calculus of variations. And the developed results are applied to implement several classes of popular optimal control problems and say minimum-time, minimum-fuel and minimum-energy problems and so on. As another key branch of optimal control methods, it also presents how to solve the optimal control problems via dynamic programming and discusses the relationship between the variational method and dynamic programming for comparison. Concerning the system involving individual agents, it is also worth to study how to implement the decentralized solution for the underlying optimal control problems in the framework of differential games. The equilibrium is implemented by applying both Pontryagin’s minimum principle and dynamic programming. The book also analyzes the discrete-time version for all the above materials as well since the discrete-time optimal control problems are very popular in many fields.
