Linear And Nonlinear Functional Analysis With Applications Second Edition written by Philippe G. Ciarlet and has been published by SIAM this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-04-23 with Mathematics categories.

This new, considerably expanded edition covers the fundamentals of linear and nonlinear functional analysis, including distribution theory, harmonic analysis, differential geometry, calculus of variations, and degree theory. Numerous applications are included, especially to linear and nonlinear partial differential equations and to numerical analysis. All the basic theorems are provided with complete and detailed proofs. The author has added more than 450 pages of new material; added more than 210 problems; the solutions to all of the problems will be made available on an accompanying website; added two entirely new chapters, one on locally convex spaces and distribution theory and the other on the Fourier transform and Calderón–Zygmund singular integral operators; and enlarged and split the chapter on the “great theorems” of nonlinear functional analysis into two chapters, one on the calculus of variations and the other on Brouwer’s theorem, Brouwer’s degree, and Leray–Schauder’s degree. Ideal for both teaching and self-study, Linear and Nonlinear Functional Analysis with Applications, Second Edition is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics, university professors, and researchers. It is also an ideal basis for several courses on linear or nonlinear functional analysis.

Through numerous illustrative examples and comments, Applied Functional Analysis, Second Edition demonstrates the rigor of logic and systematic, mathematical thinking. It presents the mathematical foundations that lead to classical results in functional analysis. More specifically, the text prepares students to learn the variational theory of partial differential equations, distributions and Sobolev spaces, and numerical analysis with an emphasis on finite element methods. While retaining the structure of its best-selling predecessor, this second edition includes revisions of many original examples, along with new examples that often reflect the authors’ own vast research experiences and perspectives. This edition also provides many more exercises as well as a solutions manual for qualifying instructors. Each chapter begins with an extensive introduction and concludes with a summary and historical comments that frequently refer to other sources. New to the Second Edition Completely revised section on lim sup and lim inf New discussions of connected sets, probability, Bayesian statistical inference, and the generalized (integral) Minkowski inequality New sections on elements of multilinear algebra and determinants, the singular value decomposition theorem, the Cauchy principal value, and Hadamard finite part integrals New example of a Lebesgue non-measurable set Ideal for a two-semester course, this proven textbook teaches students how to prove theorems and prepares them for further study of more advanced mathematical topics. It helps them succeed in formulating research questions in a mathematically rigorous way.

This book presents basic elements of the theory of Hilbert spaces and operators on Hilbert spaces, culminating in a proof of the spectral theorem for compact, self-adjoint operators on separable Hilbert spaces. It exhibits a construction of the space of pth power Lebesgue integrable functions by a completion procedure with respect to a suitable norm in a space of continuous functions, including proofs of the basic inequalities of Hölder and Minkowski. The Lp-spaces thereby emerges in direct analogy with a construction of the real numbers from the rational numbers. This allows grasping the main ideas more rapidly. Other important Banach spaces arising from function spaces and sequence spaces are also treated. In this second edition, I have expanded the material on normed vector spaces and their operators presented in Chapter 1 to include proofs of the Open Mapping Theorem, the Closed Graph Theorem and the Hahn-Banach Theorem. The material on operators between normed vector spaces is further expanded in a new Chapter 6, which presents the basic elements of the theory of Fredholm operators on general Banach spaces, not only on Hilbert spaces. This requires that we develop the theory of dual operators between Banach spaces to replace the use of adjoint operators between Hilbert spaces. With the addition of the new material on normed vector spaces and their operators, the book can serve as a general introduction to functional analysis viewed as a theory of infinite dimensional linear spaces and linear operators acting on them.

Functional analysis has become a sufficiently large area of mathematics that it is possible to find two research mathematicians, both of whom call themselves functional analysts, who have great difficulty understanding the work of the other. The common thread is the existence of a linear space with a topology or two (or more). Here the paths diverge in the choice of how that topology is defined and in whether to study the geometry of the linear space, or the linear operators on the space, or both. In this book I have tried to follow the common thread rather than any special topic. I have included some topics that a few years ago might have been thought of as specialized but which impress me as interesting and basic. Near the end of this work I gave into my natural temptation and included some operator theory that, though basic for operator theory, might be considered specialized by some functional analysts.

'The book is well written, and there is a welcome breadth in the choice of topics. I think this book is a valuable resource. Students who meticulously work through all the problems in the book in an intelligent way, will surely gain considerable insight into the subject; teachers who don’t tell their students about it will find it a valuable source for exam questions.'The Mathematical GazetteThe book offers a good introduction to topology through solved exercises. It is mainly intended for undergraduate students. Most exercises are given with detailed solutions. In the second edition, some significant changes have been made, other than the additional exercises. There are also additional proofs (as exercises) of many results in the old section 'What You Need To Know', which has been improved and renamed in the new edition as 'Essential Background'. Indeed, it has been considerably beefed up as it now includes more remarks and results for readers' convenience. The interesting sections 'True or False' and 'Tests' have remained as they were, apart from a very few changes.
