Excerpt from A Critical Examination of Socialism The subject is one, however, which, if it were to be treated exhaustively, would demand a series of volumes rather than a series Of chapters, and the arguments here set forth are written in a species Of short-hand, and at almost every turn are susceptible Of indefinite amplification. But for practical pur poses a short book which is suggestive is likely to be more use than a long one, whose argument, while more complete, might be less easily grasped and less easily available for controversial and educative purposes. What I contemplate doing at some future time is to reproduce the main argument Of this volume in a more purely constructive and less controversial form, and, having thus sketched its various parts in outline, as an introduction, to elaborate each part separately in subsequent portions Of the work. In especial, the various forms and gradations Of individual manual labor would be analyzed more fully than it has been possible to analyze them here; and a Similarly minute treatment would be applied to the directive faculties, from their simplest and most rudimentary up to their highest forms. The dynamics of motive, their relation to the general structure Of society, the difierent kinds Of life and effort imposed by nature on any society that aims at any kind of civilization, and many other subjects which need not be here specified, would all, in the same way, receive separate treatment. Excerpt from Democracy Versus Socialism: A Critical Examination of Socialism, as a Remedy for Social Injustice and an Exposition of the Single Tax Doctrine A movement which draws its vitality, as Socialism does, from the poverty and haunting sense of injustice of its rank and file, and from the moral elevation and unselfish pity of the leaders, cannot be successfully met even by the most triumphant demonstration of the impracticability of the remedies which it proposes. Revolting against the injustice of existing social arrangements and the evils thence resulting, preferring the risk of failure to ignoble acquiescence, the advocates of Socialism are, not unnaturally, deaf to merely negative criticism. It has seemed to me that this is the main reason why the many and able expositions of the impracticability of the industrial proposals of Socialism have failed to exercise any marked retarding influence upon its progress. Necessary and beneficial as such expositions are, they do not touch the heart of the matter. Failing to probe the socialist creed to its bottom, they do not show that it is based on an insufficient and faulty analysis of the causes of social injustice. Disregarding the legitimacy of the social revolt which has taken the form of Socialism, they fail to suggest any alternative method for the removal of the evils which have provoked it. Excerpt from Guild Socialism: An Historical and Critical Analysis In 1913, while I was an undergraduate in Northwestern University, one of ray instructors called ray attention to a school of social thought which had just been promulgated in England. As my knowledge of labor problems and of social theories grew, I came to feel more and more strongly that this philosophy of National Guilds was of especial timeliness and significance. Accordingly, I selected it six years afterwards as the topic for my doctrinal dissertation in Harvard University, and later for personal investigation in England. Out of these years of study and of observation this book has been written. I have somewhat regretfully come to the conclusion that Guild Socialism, as at present formulated, is not the sovereign remedy that at first it seemed. I find much of inconsistency, irrelevancy, and obscurity in its doctrines. Nevertheless, I feel that the Guild Idea contains elements of vital importance to the problems of industrial relations and of community organization that so urgently press themselves for solution to-day. Consequently, I feel that there may be use for a book that states the history and doctrines of Guild Socialism, and that also attempts an estimate of its strong and weak points. I realize only too well the shortcomings that are all but unavoidable in the presentation of so comprehensive a subject within the relatively narrow compass that it has seemed wise to set for this work. I realize also the difficulty of essaying anything like a definitive critique of a movement so new and so constantly in flux as the Guild Movement. Excerpt from The Socialist Illusion: Being a Critical Review of the Principles of State Socialism Certain genial parliamentarian casually remarked in the course of one of his public speeches that we are all Socialists now. Exactly what inspired this astonishing utterance cannot readily be determined, but it is to be feared that a Close observer would have detected in the politician's eye the suggestion of a twinkle as the words were Spoken. The true orator knows his audience, and there are times when a neat but unsuspected appeal to the gallery effectively disarms opposition and ensures attention. The statement may only have been induced by the desire to humour a section Of his audience. Certain it is that for us it has no meaning, or else we are wholly ignorant of what a Socialist is and what he strives. And hopes to accomplish. Excerpt from Socialism Critical and Constructive Two great forces are ever in conflict in the breast of Society - habit the force of stagnation, and reason the force of change. The former is commonly misinterpreted and miscalled the conservative force, whereas it is the force which resists life and ultimately ends in decay. The true conservative forces are not static, but are those which carry on life, adapting it to new conditions, producing new organs when new functions have to be performed, substituting new vitalities for spent ones, revolutionary in the sense that they see in the life of Society both the capacity for, and the promise of, fundamental change, but anti-revolutionary in the sense that they strive to bring about these changes by a never-ending organic adaptation. The movement that fulfils is the only true movement of conservation. In abnormal times - times when the errors of years and perhaps of generations have accumulated and can accumulate no more - this conflict breaks out in violence.
