Excerpt from Socialism Critical and Constructive Two great forces are ever in conflict in the breast of Society - habit the force of stagnation, and reason the force of change. The former is commonly misinterpreted and miscalled the conservative force, whereas it is the force which resists life and ultimately ends in decay. The true conservative forces are not static, but are those which carry on life, adapting it to new conditions, producing new organs when new functions have to be performed, substituting new vitalities for spent ones, revolutionary in the sense that they see in the life of Society both the capacity for, and the promise of, fundamental change, but anti-revolutionary in the sense that they strive to bring about these changes by a never-ending organic adaptation. The movement that fulfils is the only true movement of conservation. In abnormal times - times when the errors of years and perhaps of generations have accumulated and can accumulate no more - this conflict breaks out in violence. Excerpt from A Critical Examination of Socialism The subject is one, however, which, if it were to be treated exhaustively, would demand a series of volumes rather than a series Of chapters, and the arguments here set forth are written in a species Of short-hand, and at almost every turn are susceptible Of indefinite amplification. But for practical pur poses a short book which is suggestive is likely to be more use than a long one, whose argument, while more complete, might be less easily grasped and less easily available for controversial and educative purposes. What I contemplate doing at some future time is to reproduce the main argument Of this volume in a more purely constructive and less controversial form, and, having thus sketched its various parts in outline, as an introduction, to elaborate each part separately in subsequent portions Of the work. In especial, the various forms and gradations Of individual manual labor would be analyzed more fully than it has been possible to analyze them here; and a Similarly minute treatment would be applied to the directive faculties, from their simplest and most rudimentary up to their highest forms. The dynamics of motive, their relation to the general structure Of society, the difierent kinds Of life and effort imposed by nature on any society that aims at any kind of civilization, and many other subjects which need not be here specified, would all, in the same way, receive separate treatment. Excerpt from The New Socialism: An Impartial Inquiry The present book occupies, so far as I am aware, new ground among English books on Socialism. The larger historical books on the subject stop short of recent years, and leave unchronicled much Socialist thought and action of the utmost importance. My aim has been to give as briefly and fairly as possible an account of the Socialist movement over the world during the last ten years. Like everything else, Socialism has undergone a process of change, and must be studied in the works of its latest authorities. Extreme utterances of individuals have been largely disregarded. In such a movement as Socialism much exaggeration was inevitable. But Socialism has its great thinkers and students, men as candid, as thoughtful, and as earnest as any to be found in other camps. These thinkers are constructive as well as destructive. They are not afraid to acknowledge the immense difficulties that have to be conquered ere the goal is reached, and they have taken them up in earnest, admitting in many cases that they are not yet completely solved. That Socialism is a movement full of mighty import to mankind, and that the questions which it raises may at any moment present themselves in their most practical form, is now obvious to all. It is only by understanding what Socialists ask for, and why they ask it, by studying their views and arguments in their best, most considered and most impressive form that any fruitful discussion can be carried on. It is in this spirit that I have endeavoured to set forth the main points in the recent literature of Socialism. The chief books published on the Continent as well as the English literature of the subject have been thoroughly examined, and every effort has been made to secure a just and accurate account of the main issues. The periodical literature of Socialism has also been investigated to the best of my ability. It is so extensive that an absolutely complete knowledge is unattainable, but I hope that few important omissions will be found. In the Supplement I have given chapters on Revolutionary Syndicalism; Recent Developments of American Socialism; and Notes on Australian Socialism. Excerpt from Socialism in Thought and Action In the year 1900, a student would have searched American literature in vain for any adequate expression of socialism written by a sympathetic student of the subject in this country, and published by a non-socialist publishing house. From that year until the outbreak of the European war, however, volume after volume issued from the press and, by the summer of 1914, practically every phase of socialist theory and tactics had been carefully treated. Since the first of August, 1914, revolutionary changes have taken place in the socialist movement and philosophy. In many countries socialist theory, for the first time, under the most difficult circumstances, has been brought face to face with reality, and the socialist movement has evolved from a small, minority group to a powerful factor in the life of the people. The war has given a great impetus to the guild socialist idea, with its emphasis on producers' control of industry and its insistence on the development of personality as the ultimate goal of society. It has afforded world-wide publicity to the soviet form of the state, with its demand for occupational representation and its temporary "dictatorship of the proletariat." Excerpt from Revolutionary Socialism: A Study in Socialist Reconstruction The collapse of the dominant moderate Socialism was not a collapse of fundamental Socialism; it was a collapse simply of the contemporary historical expres sion of Socialism, and Socialism itself provides all the materials for the criticism of this collapse and for the reconstruction of Socialism. Excerpt from A History of Socialism For the study of socialism two things are essential on the part of the reader - good-will and the open mind. Socialism has at least a most powerful pro visional claim on our good-will, that it professes to represent the cause of the sufferers in the world's long agony, of the working - classes, of women, and of the down - trodden nations and races. If it can make any solid contribution in such a far-reaching cause it has the strongest right to be heard. Excerpt from Socialism and Co-Operation Smillie, and Trotsky, and Mr. Sidney Webb. I have called each of these gentlemen a socialist, because each would call himself a socialist. I believe in freedom of thought, and it seems to me absurd to forbid anyone to think and call himself a socialist if he wishes to do so. It is, however, notorious that Lenin and Trotsky would deny that many of the others mentioned were socialists, while some Of the others would deny' that Lenin and Trotsky's system of society had any right to call itself socialism. It is essential that a writer on socialism should face this difficulty and make his position clear at the outset. I am aware that, although I call myself and think myself a socialist, many other socialists will deny that what I call socialism is really socialism. I cannot return the compliment. I believe that most people who honestly consider themselves to be socialists are such. Lenin and Mr. Sidney Webb are both socialists, because they both wish the foundations of social organization to be Of a certain kind. They may differ fundamentally on other, and possibly equally impor tant, questions, on, e.g., the means by which the social revolution may be attained, but they do agree on this vital point they wish to substitute a socialistic for a capitalistic society. Excerpt from The Larger Aspects of Socialism Socialism can be approached equally well from two opposite directions. It may be treated either as a social movement that aims to build up a new civilization, or as a new civilization that is gradually being embodied in a social movement. In my "Socialism As It Is" I followed the first method and discussed the economic and political features of Socialism exclusively; in the present volume I shall proceed in the reverse direction and deal exclusively with its larger aspects, its intellectual and spiritual side. As the two books were conceived and written together, they are parts of a single whole; but they are built on entirely independent foundations. In dealing with the economic and political movement I followed the inductive method; taking the activities of the movement itself as my point of departure, I concluded with its generalizations. In discussing the cultural movement I have followed the deductive method. Taking as my point of departure the philosophy of modern science, which I show to be wholly Socialistic in its bearings, and wholly dependent upon Socialism for its practical applications, I have first shown what results are reached by approaching each of the subjects I have discussed from this new standpoint, and I have then pointed out how the Socialist movement is, as a matter of fact, moving along the same line.
