A Different Type of Bombshell: The Tin Hats' Journey through World War II There are bombshells that cause havoc, bombshells that shock or surprise, and then there are bombshells that belong on stage or in the movies. The story of the Tin Hats involves all three types of bombshells. It's quite a story, a story that begins for me with my father. My father spent the war in drag. Yes indeed, he was a brunette bombshell known as Trixie. He was a Canadian soldier trained in combat who was just "one of the boys" until he transformed into a female impersonator with the Tin Hats. This all-Canadian military entertainment unit was the first Canadian Concert Party in the Second World War. This group of hard-working soldier-entertainers was a smash hit, providing their unique type of support to most of the Canadian regiments throughout their various campaigns in England, Europe, and North Africa. Skilled entertainers all, they brought together quite a polished show, one that resonated with the troops longing for the sight, sound, and taste of Canadian culture. For the Tin Hats, bombshells came in all kinds of forms; they even made references to bombshells in their shows. Come along with me as I follow the Tin Hats' journey through the regiments from 1941 to 1945.

Ontario-born jazz pianist Lou Hooper (1894–1977) began his professional career in Detroit, accompanying blues singers such as Ma Rainey at the legendary Koppin Theatre. In 1921 he moved to Harlem, performing alongside Paul Robeson and recording extensively in and around Tin Pan Alley, before moving to Montreal in the 1930s. Prolific and influential, Hooper was an early teacher of Oscar Peterson and deeply involved in the jazz community in Montreal. When the Second World War broke out he joined the Canadian Armed Forces and entertained the troops in Europe. Near the end of his life Hooper came to prominence for his exceptional career and place in the history of jazz, inspiring an autobiography that was never published. Statesman of the Piano makes this document widely available for the first time and includes photographs, concert programs, lyrics, and other documents to reconstruct his life and times. Historians, archivists, musicians, and cultural critics provide annotations and commentary, examining some of the themes that emerge from Hooper’s writing and music. Statesman of the Piano sparks new conversations about Hooper’s legacy while shedding light on the cross-border travels and wartime experiences of Black musicians, the politics of archiving and curating, and the connections between race and music in the twentieth century.

Body Politics and the Fictional Double Edited by Debra Walker King Examines the disjunction between women's appearance and reality. In recent years, questions concerning "the body" and its place in postmodern discourses have taken center stage in academic disciplines. Body Politics joins these discussions by focusing on the challenges women face when their externally defined identities and representations as bodies -- their body fictions -- speak louder than what they know to be their true selves. Racialized, gendered, or homophobic body fictions disfigure individuals by placing them beneath a veil of invisibility and by political, emotional, or spiritual suffocation. As objects of interpretation, "female bodies" in search of health care, legal assistance, professional respect, identity confirmation, and financial security must first confront their fictionalized doubles in a collision that, in many cases, ends in disappointment, distress, and even suicide. The contributors reflect on women's day-to-day lives and the cultural productions (literature, MTV, film, etc.) that give body fictions their power and influence. By exploring how these fictions are manipulated politically, expressively, and communally, they offer reinterpretations that challenge the fictional double while theorizing the discursive and performative forms it takes.
