A história da sexualidade humana foi caracterizada pela exclusão dos corpos considerados abjetos pelos padrões sociais vigentes. Na atualidade, essa situação ainda pode ser constatada em relação às minorias sexuais, dentre as quais travestis e transexuais sofrem vultosos níveis de preconceito. Nessa seara, cumpre destacar a importância da Teoria Queer e dos estudos voltados a essa população, que, ao produzirem um arcabouço teórico direcionado à proteção das pessoas transgênero, permitiram pequenos avanços no respeito à dignidade da pessoa humana de tais indivíduos. Ao se analisar a transexualidade e a travestilidade sob a óptica dos direitos fundamentais e da Constituição Federal, resta clara a necessidade de promoção de ações afirmativas em prol da referida minoria sexual com o escopo de redução das desigualdades existentes, promoção da diversidade e inclusão desse grupo em espaços sociais e políticos. Atualmente, existem algumas iniciativas com essa finalidade e que apresentam bons resultados. No entanto, o alcance delas ainda se revela ínfimo, de modo que há a necessidade de ampliação das políticas já existentes e estabelecimento de novas iniciativas que promovam e protejam os direitos básicos da população em apreço.

A cidadania é um direito constitucionalmente assegurado pelo ordenamento brasileiro, mas que nem todos os grupos sociais conseguem exercer. Em virtude das mais diversas exclusões vivenciadas, algumas minorias têm experiências muito específicas de fruição de direitos, como é o caso da população LGBT, especialmente travestis e transexuais. Este livro pretende conhecer e analisar o contexto atualizado das exclusões vivenciadas por travestis e transexuais no Brasil, observar a atuação do movimento social na proposição e manutenção do debate dessas pautas e entender de que forma o Poder Público tem agido para combater as desigualdades verificadas, que impedem que essas pessoas sejam tratadas com igualdade no que diz respeito ao acesso aos direitos previstos a todos os cidadãos. How the transgender experience opens up new possibilities for thinking about gender and race In the summer of 2015, shortly after Caitlyn Jenner came out as transgender, the NAACP official and political activist Rachel Dolezal was "outed" by her parents as white, touching off a heated debate in the media about the fluidity of gender and race. If Jenner could legitimately identify as a woman, could Dolezal legitimately identify as black? Taking the controversial pairing of “transgender” and “transracial” as his starting point, Rogers Brubaker shows how gender and race, long understood as stable, inborn, and unambiguous, have in the past few decades opened up—in different ways and to different degrees—to the forces of change and choice. Transgender identities have moved from the margins to the mainstream with dizzying speed, and ethnoracial boundaries have blurred. Paradoxically, while sex has a much deeper biological basis than race, choosing or changing one's sex or gender is more widely accepted than choosing or changing one’s race. Yet while few accepted Dolezal’s claim to be black, racial identities are becoming more fluid as ancestry—increasingly understood as mixed—loses its authority over identity, and as race and ethnicity, like gender, come to be understood as something we do, not just something we have. By rethinking race and ethnicity through the multifaceted lens of the transgender experience—encompassing not just a movement from one category to another but positions between and beyond existing categories—Brubaker underscores the malleability, contingency, and arbitrariness of racial categories. Responding to a critical need for greater perspectives on transgender life in the United States, Genny Beemyn and Susan (Sue) Rankin apply their extensive expertise to a groundbreaking survey--one of the largest ever conducted in the U.S.--on gender development and identity-making among transsexual women, transsexual men, crossdressers, and genderqueer individuals. With nearly 3,500 participants, the survey is remarkably diverse, and with more than 400 follow-up interviews, the data offers limitless opportunities for research and interpretation.
