Despite the fact that Miao-Yao (or Hmong-Mien) is one of the major language families of East and Southeast Asia, this work is only the second full-length descriptive grammar of any Miao-Yao language published in English. It focuses on Xong, a language belonging to the Miao branch of the family. Xong has approximately 900,000 speakers, the vast majority lives in Hunan and Guizhou Provinces in South-Central China. In particular, this description concentrates on several fully mutually intelligible Xong varieties spoken in Fenghuang County, located in the Hunan Province. In producing this work, the author primarily relies on the fieldwork data he collected over a period of ten months in Fenghuang County. He also made use of many of the previously published Chinese-language descriptions of Xong. The results are of use to scholars with an interest in the Miao-Yao family in particular or in the languages of East and Southeast Asia more in general.

Jamsay is the largest-population language among some twenty Dogon languages in Mali, West Africa. This is the first comprehensive grammar of any Dogon language, including a full tonology. The language is verb-final, with subject agreement on the verb and with no other case-marking. Its most striking feature is the morphosyntactically triggered use of stem-wide tone-contour overlays on nouns, verbs, and adjectives. All stems have a lexical tone contour such as H[igh], L[ow]-H, HL, or LHL with at least one H-tone. An exam of tone overlay is tone-dropping to stem-wide all-L. This is used for Perfective verbs (in the presence of a focalized constituent), and for a noun or adjective before an adjective. It is also used to mark the head NP in a relative clause (the head NP is not extracted, so this is the only direct indication of head NP status). The verb in a relative clause is morphologically a participle, agreeing with the head NP in humanness and number, rather than with the subject. "Intonation" is used grammatically. For example, NP conjunction 'X and Y' is expressed as X Y, without a conjunction, but with "dying-quail" intonation on both conjuncts.

Excerpt from A Yao Grammar Since the first edition of this hook was published I have had the opportunity of visiting Yaoland proper, in Portuguese East Africa and the country north of the Rovuma. I have thus been enabled to study more thoroughly the language as it is spoken by the Amasaninga and Amangoche Yaos; as a result the Grammar has been thoroughly revised and some important constructions added. The Vocabulary has been enlarged and now includes most of the words in common use, though of course it makes no pretension to completeness. Unfortunately my dictionary is still incomplete, largely owing to the loss of Mss representing several years work. In this edition the classification of the nouns has been altered so as to bring it into line with other works on Bantu languages; this is necessary for the purpose of comparison. The scheme adopted is a modified form of that introduced by Bleek and is one that will in the course of time, I believe, become universal.
