Excerpt from A Graphic Method for Solving Certain Algebraic Problems A portion of the following pages first appeared in Van Nostrand's Engineering Magazine for June, 1875. The method was suggested by the common mode of representing the movement of railway trains, which was employed as long ago as 1850, and was first brought to the writer's knowledge by the late S. S. Post, the well known Civil Engineer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Elementary Theory of Equations The longer an engineer has been separated from his alma mater, the fewer mathematical formulas he uses and the more he relies upon tables and, when the latter fail, upon graphical methods. Although graphical methods have the advantage of being ocular, they frequently suffer from the fact that only what is seen is sensed. But this defect is due to the kind of graphics used. With the aid of the scientific art of graphing pre sented in Chapter I, one may not merely make better graphs in less time but actually draw correct negative conclusions from a graph so made, and therefore sense more than one sees. For instance, one may be sure that a given cubic equation has only the one real root seen in the graph, if the bend points lie on the same side of the x-axis. Emphasis is here placed upon Newton's method of solving numerical equations, both from the graphical and the numerical standpoint. One of several advantages (well recognized in Europe) of Newton's method over Homer's is that it applies as well to non-algebraic as to algebraic equations. In this elementary book, the author has of course omitted the difficult Galois theory of algebraic equations (certain texts on which are very erroneous) and has merely illustrated the subject of invariants by a few examples. It is surprising that the theorems of Descartes, Budan, and Sturm, on the real roots of an equation, are Often stated inaccurately. Nor are the texts in English on this subject more fortunate on the score of correct proofs; for these reasons, care has been taken in selecting the books to which the reader is referred in the present text. The material is here so arranged that, before an important general theorem is stated, the reader has had concrete illustrations and often also special cases. The exercises are so placed that a reasonably elegant and brief solution may be expected, without resort to tedious multiplications and similar manual labor. Very few Of the five hundred exercises are of the same nature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Graphic Algebra IT is now generally conceded that graphic methods are not only of great importance for practical work and scientific investigation, but also that their educational value for sec ondary instruction is very considerable. Consequently, an increasing number of schools have introduced graphic algebra into their courses, and several elementary text-books on graphs have been published. This book gives an elementary presentation of all the funda mental principles included in such courses, and contains in addition a number of methods which are shorter and require less numerical work than those usually given. Thus, for the solution of a cubic or biquadratic by the customary method a great deal of calculation is necessary to determine the co ordinates of a number of points. To avoid these calculations and to make the work truly graphic, the author has devised a series of methods for solving quadratics, cubics, and biquad ratios by means of a standard curve and straight lines or circles. Two of these methods - the solution of quadratics by a parabola 30) and of incomplete cubics by a cubic parabola 49) - are but slight modifications of methods previously known; the others are original with the author, who first pub lished them in a paper read before the American Mathematical Society in April, 1905. Excerpt from On Some Iterative Methods for Solving Elliptic Difference Equations The theorems are used to define three subclasses, called complete image classes, of the general family. These classes contain many of the schemes in current use as well as generalizations of them. Thus it is shown that a variety of independently proposed and seemingly unrelated iterative methods are special cases of a general class of methods. These complete image classes are such that each of the eigenvalues of any scheme in the class is a given algebraic function of at least one of the eigenvalues of a particular reference scheme of the class. Thus a knowledge of the eigenvalues of the reference schemepermits, in principle, the determination of the best scheme of the given class. A special class of equations is considered for which all the eigenvalues of each reference scheme can be explicitly written in terms of the eigenvalues of two matrices. It is then possible to determine which of the reference schemes is best and hence it is also possible to determine that scheme which is best of all those in the complete image classes. First Year Mathematics For Secondary Schools Classic Reprint written by George William Myers and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03-24 with Mathematics categories.

Excerpt from First-Year Mathematics for Secondary Schools This volume aims to present in teachable form an inter weaving Of the more concrete and the easier portions of the first courses in both algebra and geometry. It is intended as a text for students of the first year of secondary schools. The type of work begun here will be continued by a second year text, to appear soon and to include not less than the rest of the subject-matters that make up the customary two years of required secondary work in algebra and plane geometry. The present book places chief emphasis upon algebra, but weaves in a considerable body of related fundamental notions and principles Of geometry, even advancing somewhat in one direction or another upon the most concrete, graphic, and practical aspects of elementary geometry. Geometrical treat ments are at first intuitive, inductive, and experimental, fol lowed in a few instances by the quasi-experimental methods of superposition. A like informality as to method characterizes the first half of the algebra. The algebraic treatments feature distinctly: (i) the liberal use of inductions from arithmetic; (2) the early and persistent use of the equation, both as an instrument for problem - solving, and as a means of suggesting and of treating topics; (3) the early, varied, and systematic use Of pictured and graphic modes of rendering algebraic truths Vivid and appealing to beginners. The algebra of the last half of the book is more formally deductive in character. Even as early as p. 26 the four pro cess-axioms are given as simple statements of the four ways in which equations have been changed in solving arithmetical and mensurational problems. They are stated as laws forusing the equation, and are given only as much generality as the antecedent work justifies. Transformations of equations are then made on the basis of these laws and of others brought out from time to time as the work proceeds, until p. 216 is reached, where a fifth general axiom is added, and the five are here given final statement. These five axioms are hence forth made the reasons for all changes in equations. The root-axiom is added later when an ocrasion to use it arises. Thus the transition from the informal procedure of the earlier part of the algebra to the formal procedure of the later part is gradual, while throughout the latter half the reasoning becomes more and more highly deductive. This is in accord with what both Classroom practice and a-priori reasoning Show to be the natural order for secondary mathematical education. Excerpt from Graphic Algebra: Or Geometrical Interpretation of the Theory of Equations of One Unknown Quantity OF late years Graphical Methods have been used with great profit in many departments of science. Such methods give a clear and comprehensive View of the facts of observa tion, and, by suggesting new relations, furnish a valuable means of formulating new laws. Their importance in solv ing many problems in applied mathematics is also very generally recognized. In interpreting analytical expressions and illustrating analytical processes in pure mathematics such methods are equally valuable. They accustom the student to take into account not merely one detail at a time of a complex operation, but show at a glance all the results in their proper relations. Such methods are well adapted to the presentation of the principles and processes of the Theory of Equations. The Theory of Equations is a subject so essential in all the appli cations of Mathematical Analysis that the student should be made familiar with it early in his course. But at this stage he is not prepared to appreciate the very general analytical demonstrations found in treatises on this subject. He is not accustomed to such methods of reasoning, and, although he may not be able to find any flaws in the logic, he is not familiar with the conceptions employed, and cannot give any tangible form to his ideas. Therefore they are vague and unsatisfactory. Knowledge so sought is soon lost, and the only permanent result of such study is a loose way of think ing. On the other hand, the Graphical Method presentsthese abstract principles in a concrete form. Each principle therefore becomes firmly impressed on the mind, and the student escapes the tendency to substitute a form of words for clear conceptions of ideas. This work is based on some years' experience in teaching the Theory of Equations to the Freshman Class in Yale Col lege, and is adapted to students who have mastered quadratic equations and the principle of similar triangles.
