Excerpt from Graphic Algebra: An Elementary Text Book for College Students, Graphs In chapter VIII, the general formulae for the nth roots of ]1, are arrived at by easy steps from previous geometrical considerations, without the introduction of Demoivre's Formula, or of the exponential form of the complex quantity. The next two chapters discuss complex quantities, and the Argand Diagram in which are given some of the simple principles of the calculus of complex quanti ties and some simple complex functions. The geometrical rules for complex multiplication and division constitute a novel feature which will do much toward simplifying the graphical representation of complex functions. The student cannot become too thoroughly familiar with these rules. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Graphic Algebra IT is now generally conceded that graphic methods are not only of great importance for practical work and scientific investigation, but also that their educational value for sec ondary instruction is very considerable. Consequently, an increasing number of schools have introduced graphic algebra into their courses, and several elementary text-books on graphs have been published. This book gives an elementary presentation of all the funda mental principles included in such courses, and contains in addition a number of methods which are shorter and require less numerical work than those usually given. Thus, for the solution of a cubic or biquadratic by the customary method a great deal of calculation is necessary to determine the co ordinates of a number of points. To avoid these calculations and to make the work truly graphic, the author has devised a series of methods for solving quadratics, cubics, and biquad ratios by means of a standard curve and straight lines or circles. Two of these methods - the solution of quadratics by a parabola 30) and of incomplete cubics by a cubic parabola 49) - are but slight modifications of methods previously known; the others are original with the author, who first pub lished them in a paper read before the American Mathematical Society in April, 1905. Excerpt from Graphic Algebra for Secondary Schools This pamphlet is intended to meet the growing demand in this country for graphical methods and illustrations in connection with elementary Algebra in the secondary schools. A recent committee of the American Mathematical Society, in formulating standard college entrance require ments in Algebra, uses this language: The use of graph ical methods and illustrations, particularly in connection with the solution of equations, is also expected. This little book is the author's interpretation of the committee's recommendation both as to kind and amount of such graphical work. It may be used to supplement any text-book in Algebra. In plotting the graphs of equations the pupil should use squared paper similar to the sample sheet in the back of the pamphlet. Excerpt from A Short Introduction to Graphical Algebra The lines Y 0 Y are usually drawn horizontally and vertically they are taken as lines of reference and are known as the axis of X and y respectively. The point 0 is called the origin. Values of x are measured from 0 along the axis of 37, according to some convenient Scale of measurement, and are called abscissae, positive values being drawn to the right of 0 along 0x, and negative values to the left Of 0 along ox'. Values of g are drawn (on the same scale) parallel to the axis of g, from the ends of the corresponding abscissae, and are called ordinates. These are positive when drawn above X'X, negative when drawn below X'X. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Graphic Method for Solving Certain Algebraic Problems A portion of the following pages first appeared in Van Nostrand's Engineering Magazine for June, 1875. The method was suggested by the common mode of representing the movement of railway trains, which was employed as long ago as 1850, and was first brought to the writer's knowledge by the late S. S. Post, the well known Civil Engineer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Graphic Algebra: Or Geometrical Interpretation of the Theory of Equations of One Unknown Quantity OF late years Graphical Methods have been used with great profit in many departments of science. Such methods give a clear and comprehensive View of the facts of observa tion, and, by suggesting new relations, furnish a valuable means of formulating new laws. Their importance in solv ing many problems in applied mathematics is also very generally recognized. In interpreting analytical expressions and illustrating analytical processes in pure mathematics such methods are equally valuable. They accustom the student to take into account not merely one detail at a time of a complex operation, but show at a glance all the results in their proper relations. Such methods are well adapted to the presentation of the principles and processes of the Theory of Equations. The Theory of Equations is a subject so essential in all the appli cations of Mathematical Analysis that the student should be made familiar with it early in his course. But at this stage he is not prepared to appreciate the very general analytical demonstrations found in treatises on this subject. He is not accustomed to such methods of reasoning, and, although he may not be able to find any flaws in the logic, he is not familiar with the conceptions employed, and cannot give any tangible form to his ideas. Therefore they are vague and unsatisfactory. Knowledge so sought is soon lost, and the only permanent result of such study is a loose way of think ing. On the other hand, the Graphical Method presentsthese abstract principles in a concrete form. Each principle therefore becomes firmly impressed on the mind, and the student escapes the tendency to substitute a form of words for clear conceptions of ideas. This work is based on some years' experience in teaching the Theory of Equations to the Freshman Class in Yale Col lege, and is adapted to students who have mastered quadratic equations and the principle of similar triangles. Excerpt from An Introduction to Graphical Algebra: For the Use of High Schools It did not seem desirable to merely suggest in a general way what appears to the author the most desirable change in high-school instruction in order to increase the efficiency of college work. The aim has been rather to show how such changes may be accomplished without radical departures from present methods. Excerpt from A First Book in Algebra I. A simplification of subject matter. Among the omissions are the involved use of the parenthesis, the larger part of factor ing, complex fractions, special devices in the solution of equa tions, the method of comparison in solving simultaneous equa tions, the square root of complicated expressions, all treatment of fractional, negative, and literal exponents, and most of radicals. II. Increased and systematic use of the graph. The omissions just specified make possible, among other things, an enlarged and systematized use of the graph. At the outset, the scales to be used on the axes and also partial diagrams for graphs are supplied. The other various stages by which the pupil pro ceeds from the simple to the more complex cases have been carefully developed. The pupil thus acquires an organized and comprehensive grasp and a power both to construct and to interpret graphs, giving a disciplinary training equal and per haps superior to that conferred by the more technical algebraic topics omitted, and far exceeding them in vocational and cultural values.
