This handbook is intended both as a personal reflection on the idea and hope of Beloved Community and as a resource for use by nonprofits, churches, and programs in higher education hoping to create inclusive and welcoming communities. The working definition of Beloved Community invoked here is an inclusive, interrelated consciousness based on love, justice, responsibility, shared power, and a respect for all that radically transforms individuals and institutions. It requires both that people work on themselves and on the institutions they inhabit. The term dates back to Josiah Royce, a nineteenth-century theologian, and Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement; it continues to be used in widespread present-day efforts among institutions and organizations seeking to build more inclusive communities. The material includes practical guidelines for fostering Beloved Community, as well as stories and lessons learned from more than thirty-five years of working with various groups.

In recent years, gaps in college opportunities have contributed to diminished social mobility and are influenced by disparities in collegiate experiences. An integral part of the mission of colleges and universities is to advance student achievement and prepare students for a global society by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access. In order to provide equal educational opportunities, further study on the best practices to create a diverse and welcoming campus community for all faculty and students is required. The Handbook of Research on Opening Pathways for Marginalized Individuals in Higher Education examines specific case studies and stories from the field, analyzes the research breadth for supporting the creation of policies to foster equitable educational access, and studies higher education inclusive policies that promote leadership, social justice, and the health and well-being of faculty and students. The book also helps to alleviate and remedy issues of “historical privilege” with a lens on diversity and support through the creation of inclusive communities of equitable educational access. Covering a range of topics such as social justice, accessibility, and healthy student interactions, this reference work is ideal for academicians, researchers, scholars, practitioners, instructors, and students.

Insurgent Urbanisms are often portrayed as spontaneous, grassroots responses to the inequities embedded in urban policies and—operating entirely outside state structures. But are they truly autonomous? In Insurgent Urbanisms in the Americas, Kristine Stiphany and Edna Ely-Ledesma offer a new perspective on how struggles for more inclusive and equitable cities take shape—and how they transform the very institutions and spaces they confront. From Brazil’s favelas to Ecuador’s suburbios, and Puerto Rico’s hurricane-battered shores to the gentrified centers of U.S. cities, marginalized communities have long challenged dominant models of urban development. Over time, these struggles have not only resisted the status quo but have become new modes of urbanism and sites of planning. Stiphany and Ely-Ledesma show how insurgencies connect across places while remaining deeply context-specific—tracing their origins in housing movements, their evolution through co-produced knowledge, and their reinvention in response to climate crisis. Through powerful field research and firsthand activism, contributors reveal how insurgencies not only resist but actively reshape urban orders, built environments, and public landscapes—issuing a compelling call to make urbanism matter. This volume is essential reading for students, educators, and practitioners of design and urban planning, Latin American and Latinx studies, and spatial justice—anyone seeking to understand how insurgency becomes a method for transforming cities.

An Award-Winning Challenge to Popular Ideas of the Kingdom According to Scot McKnight, "kingdom" is the biblical term most misused by Christians today. It has taken on meanings that are completely at odds with what the Bible says and has become a buzzword for both social justice and redemption. In Kingdom Conspiracy, McKnight offers a sizzling biblical corrective and a fiercely radical vision for the role of the local church in the kingdom of God. Now in paper.
