Excerpt from A High School Course in Physics Physics is the summary of a part of human experience. Its development has resulted from the fact that its pursuit has successfully met human needs. Hence it is believed that the presentation of the subject in the secondary school should be the expansion of the everyday life of the pupil into the broader experience and observation of those whose lives have been devoted to the study. Human activity and progress, therefore, should be the teacher's guiding principle, and the bearing of each phenomenon and law on the interests of mankind should be clearly disclosed and emphasized. The author of this book has accordingly endeavored to give great prominence to facts of common observation in the derivation of physical laws, and, further, has attempted to point out plainly the service that has been afforded mankind by a knowledge of nature's laws. No textbook, however, can take the place of the skilled teacher in showing clearly the relation of physical phenomena to human activities, or in the selection of illustrative examples within the range of observation of his pupils. Large portions of the subject-matter of Physics deal with knowledge already possessed by a pupil of high-school age, and nothing is of more appealing interest to him than the feeling that this information is to be made of some value. By recalling phenomena well within the acquaintance of the pupil and supplementing them with demonstrative experiments, the way is easily paved to the deduction and interpretation of general principles. In the presentation of such experiments, the author has described as simple and inexpensive apparatus as he has found to be consistent with satisfactory results. No effort has been spared to give the teacher and pupil every possible assistance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Study of the Mathematics Used in a High School Course in Physics: Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Physics in the Graduate School of the University of Illinois, 1913 During recent years there has been a marked decrease in the percentage of high school students taking physics. Many educators charge this loss principally to the mathematics required in the physics course. Hall says, The half-score of text-books in physics I have glanced over seem essentially quantitative, require great exactness, and are largely devoted to precise measurements, with too much and too early insistence on mathematics. He says further that the boy in his teens is in the popular science age; that he wants and needs great wholes, facts in profusion, but few formulae; that he wants demonstrative experiments without being bothered by equations. Excerpt from A Laboratory Course in Physics for Secondary Schools Although laboratory work is now generally recognized as an indispensable part of any adequate course in elementary physics, it is nevertheless a lamentable fact that there are still some schools in which it is not attempted at all, while there are others in which, despite the most expensive equipment, the laboratory fails, on the whole, either to interest or instruct. Both of these conditions are probably attributable to one and the same cause. In our modern glorification of the laboratory method, particularly of exact, quantitative measurements, and in our haste to get away from the superficial, descriptive physics of thirty years ago, some of us have undoubtedly gone so far as to defeat our own aims. We have made the laboratory an impossibility in schools which are financially weak, because we have made its expense prohibitive; and we have made it a disappointment in other schools which are financially strong, because in our eagerness to show our students exactly how much we have neglected to show them how and why. In short, the gravest danger which threatens the efficiency of the high-school laboratory to-day is the danger which arises from the creeping over of the methods and the instruments of research and specialization from the university into the high school, where they have absolutely no place, - the danger that principles shall be lost sight of in the bewildering details of refined methods and refined instruments. A First Course In Physics written by Robert Andrews Millikan and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-13 with Science categories.

Excerpt from A First Course in Physics The course presented in this book, and in the List of Laboratory Experiments, which is published in a separate volume, has grown out of the actual needs of the elementary work in physics in the University of Chicago, particularly in the University High School of the School of Education and the affiliated secondary schools. Its most characteristic features have been on trial for three or four years in more than a score of different secondary schools in various parts of the country. The books represent primarily an attempt to give concrete expression to a rapidly spreading movement to make high-school physics, to a less extent than it has been in the past, either a condensed reproduction of college physics, or a mathematical and mechanical introduction to technical science, and to a greater extent than it has heretofore been, a simple and immediate presentation, in language which the student already understands, of the hows and whys of the physical world in which he lives. A second aim has been to develop a course in which the laboratory and class-room phases of elementary instruction in physics are carefully differentiated and, at the same time, closely correlated. It is hoped that something may thus be done toward remedying the inadequacy which still exists in the laboratory instruction of many of the smaller schools. A very carefully selected and tested list of distinctively class-room demonstrations will be found to run through the book in fine print, while footnotes indicate the location and nature of the laboratory exercises which should be inserted. For the sake of definiteness and simplicity the references are made simply to the authors manual, though the exercises may be taken from any good laboratory text.
