Excerpt from A House of Memories On the south side of the square, and leading out of it, is St. Martin's street, a short and narrow street which, crossing the narrow and elon gated Orange-street at right angles, proceeds to the rear of the National Gallery. It was in this street, on the left side, and at the corner of Long'* court, that there stood for upwards of two centuries the house of which Macaulay said Newton House is well known, and will continue to be well known as long as England re tains any trace of civilisation. Excerpt from The House of Broken Dreams: A Memory IT was in the morning, towards noontide, when you came. The dawn flushed across a beauteous world where soft airs blew; the breath of violets was everywhere; crystal dewdrops sparkled on the lawn; the birds sang in merry chorus from the bougainvillea outside our window. And it was, oh, how heavenly dear and glad the day! Soft footsteps moved in the shadowy room, kind hands fulfilled their gentle offices, and presently your little lonely cry rang out, the cry of the firstborn. Excerpt from Memories of the Old Homestead This is the story of my old Lorraine home, and I tell it, thinking it may be of interest to my children or to the children of others of the family. I have not attempted to give an elaborate family history, but have written of the early times in the old homestead and of some of the things that there took place, as I now remember them. If in this recital the personal pronoun occurs too often, it must be remembered that I am talking, principally, of my own recollections. Neither do I wish to convey the impression that the writer did any more than his proper share of the work or had more interesting experiences than others of the family. Indeed, being the youngest of a family of nine, it is more likely that he, the baby, had the easiest time of any, and, if any favors were shown, he got his full share. I intended to occupy but a few pages, but as I got into the subject I found more difficulty as to what I should omit than what to tell, and as material for volumes crowded my mind, I fully realized that the old live in the past, the young in the future. Excerpt from Memories of Home: And Other Poems Against the upright leaned a kitchen wing, Which one might think a mean, dependent thing; But, when the reg'lar gales of Autumn came, And the old house creaked, as tho' it were in pain, Or often reeled, like some lost ship at sea, The kitchen stout, her moorings held, while We In this apartment waited for the morn. Excerpt from Indian Home Memories I belong to an anglo-indian family, and am saturated with Indian traditions and associations. My father and grandfather were in the Indian Civil Service before me, and one of my sons is now a member of that Service. I was myself in the Civil Service for thirty-five years. My life in India was not devoid of incident; I have had the honour to rise to high office, and for four years after my retirement I sat as a Member of the House of Commons. I have made many friends, and, I am sorry to say, not a few enemies. In these pages, which are an unvarnished record, I submit my memoirs to the judgment of the public, and venture to hope that they may add to the number of my friends and not increase the ranks of those who are enrolled upon the other side. Excerpt from Memories of the Months How often one may hear people who enjoy command of their own time complain of the dulness of life in the country. Poets, children, lovers, and a few other abnormal individuals, derive constant solace from the seasons; but modern life in England has been arranged with studied indifference to them. Man - slowest among vertebrate animals to attain maturity, yet whose years are but a span compared with those of the oak or lowly lichen - man, leaden-footed among beasts, wingless among fowls - a poor climber - a bad swimmer - has shown his discontent with Nature by devising a scheme of civilisation to make him independent of her infinite changefulness. Artificial illuminants have rendered him indifferent to the radiance of rising and setting suns; neither storm nor shine are allowed to interrupt the monotony of counting-house, factory, or mine; while, strangest of all, fashion has decreed that the fairest half of the year can only be spent in an overgrown, smoky town, built chie y on swampy ground, lying along a muddy estuary. Excerpt from Memories of the White House: The Home Life of Our Presidents From Lincoln to Roosevelt I beg to express my indebtedness to Mr. Henry Rood, who first suggested to me these personal recollections of the family and home life of the Presidents I have known, while they resided in the White House. After months of consultation with me and study of my diaries, he organized the several chapters and wrote them. It is hoped that this unpretentious volume will give readers a better understanding than they might otherwise have had, of Presidents Lincoln, Johnson, Grant, Hayes, Garfield, Arthur, Cleveland, Harrison, McKinley, and Roosevelt, whom I saw daily, and who, one and all, have treated me with the utmost kindness and consideration during my forty-six years of continuous service in the Executive Office.
