Quality aggregate availability in southern Louisiana has reached an alarmingly low level, while naturally occurring materials (sands) have been ignored due to their poor structural properties. Recent research reported by Chem-Crete Corporation indicates that structural properties of sand mixes incorporating Chem-Crete binder compare favorably with dense-graded asphaltic concrete. This binder, processed according to a new refinery technique, is purported to improve asphalt properties such as strength, durability, temperature susceptibility and water resistance. These attributes and other properties of sand/Chem-Crete mixes are examined in this report.

The feasibility of using the Georgia Loaded-Wheel Tester (GLWT) to predict rutting in the laboratory was investigated in this research. The research was performed in two phases. The first phase consisted of modifying the GLWT to handle 15.2 cm (6 in) cores, developing a laboratory compaction procedure for cores, determining the optimum laboratory testing conditions, and investigating the repeatability of the GLWT. The second phase of the study included correlating rut depth values obtained with the GLWT to actual field rut depth values, utilizing the GLWT to evaluate the effects of the asphalt additive SOMAT on asphalt concrete mixes, and evaluating the rut resistance of Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA). Results from the study show that the GLWT is capable of predicting rutting in asphalt pavements prior to construction. In addition, results from the GLWT correlate well with results from more expensive European Testers.

During the past 25 years, the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, in collaboration with the Russian Academy of Sciences, have carried out a wide variety of activities to improve understanding of the challenges in containing and reducing ethnic conflicts, violent extremism, and terrorism. Roots and Trajectories of Violent Extremism and Terrorism provides an overview of this cross-ocean program, which has involved American and Russian scientists, engineers, and medical professionals from a large number of government agencies, leading research institutions, think tanks, educational institutions, analytical centers, and consulting and commercial firms in the two countries. This report highlights challenges addressed by the academies over many years that remain of current interest as the U.S., Russian, and other governments continue to cope with old and new forms of aggression that threaten the livelihood of populations at home and abroad.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) specifies polymer-modified asphalt binders for certain asphalt mixtures used on high-volume, high-priority routes. These binders must meet performance grade (PG) requirements for a PG 76-22 binder in addition to elastic recovery requirements. This typically results in the use of binders containing styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modifiers. However, other polymer modifiers may also be used to achieve the PG 76-22 classification. One of these modifiers is a copolymer of SBS and polyethylene (PE) (SBS-PE) another modifier is ground tire rubber (GTR). This study was undertaken to investigate the suitability of SBS PE modified PG 76-22 binder and GTR-modified PG 76-22 binder for use in Virginia. Each modified binder was used in a 12.5 mm nominal maximum aggregate size mixture to pave approximately 2.3 lane-miles. All mixtures were produced as warm mix asphalt using a foaming system. The binders evaluated included a typical SBS polymer-modified binder as a control and binders modified with SBS-PE and GTR. During construction, all processes were documented and material was sampled for evaluation. Binder and mixture tests were performed. Binder testing included performance grading and multiple stress creep and relaxation testing. Mixture testing included volumetric analysis, dynamic modulus, and flow number tests and cracking, rutting, and fatigue analysis. Binder testing indicated that the control binder and SBS PE modified binders met VDOT specifications for classification as a PG 76-22 binder; the GTR-modified binder graded to a PG 70-22 binder, as it did not meet the PG 76-22 high-temperature specification and did not pass the elastic recovery requirement. Laboratory mixture testing indicated that the performance of the SBS PE modified mixture should be similar to that of the control mixture. Laboratory test results for the GTR-modified mixture were mixed, with some indicating that the performance was similar to that of the control mixture and some indicating that the performance may be less than that of the control. Based on the study, SBS PE modified binders should continue to be allowed as an alternative to SBS-modified binder provided specifications for PG 76-22 binders are met. However, further investigation of GTR-modified binders is suggested before recommendations can be made. In addition, long-term evaluation of the field site is recommended for validation of the laboratory findings.

Laboratory Evaluation Of Nanoclay Asphalt Binders written by M M Tariq Morshed and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019 with Asphalt categories.

The main goal of this study is to assess the feasibility of the use of nanoclay as an alternative to commonly used polymers such as styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), which are used to modify the performance grade (PG) of asphalt binders. Three types of nanoclay and two types of neat binders were selected for laboratory investigation. Different amounts (1, 2, and 3%) of nanoclays were used. A blending protocol was developed to mix the nanoclay with the asphalt binder. Penetration, Rotational Viscosity (RV), Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR), Multiple Stress Creep and Recovery (MSCR), Frequency Sweep (FS), Linear Amplitude Sweep (LAS), Optical Contact Analyzer (OCA), Texas Boiling Test, and Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) were conducted to evaluate the properties of modified asphalt binders. Significant increases of viscosity and complex shear modulus were observed for nanoclay-modified binders because of its nanoscale phenomena such as structural features, quantum effects, spacial confinement, and high surface energy.
