Excerpt from Laboratory Guide in Experimental Pharmacology: Directions for the Course Given in the University of Michigan In the years which have elapsed since these notes were first put into permanent form the book has been placed in service in different pharmacological laboratories over the country, and in this revision which the progress of the science makes necessary, the suggestions which have been received from teachers of the subject have proved most welcome and helpful. It would seem that the wish expressed in the preface to the first edition that these notes might prove useful to others has been realized. It need hardly be pointed out that the object of the book is not to furnish an exhaustive treatise on laboratory methods, but rather a simple outline of experiments which can easily be carried out by the average medical student in any laboratory equipped for the purpose. That the arrangement is entirely practical and workable is proved by the fact that these directions essentially as here published, have been in use in this laboratory for considerably over twenty years. The more important changes which have been made in this revision may be mentioned shortly. The section on pharmaceutical work has been enlarged by the introduction of directions for making a few preparations other than those already included in the earlier edition of the book, and all of these directions have been collected and placed in the early part of the book. This will allow of the omission of this section entirely in schools in which medical students are given a special course in pharmacy. There may be some question as to the general advisability of combining text-books and reference books; but in Pharmacology this appears to be necessary, since every student may need more detailed information at any time. These objects necessitated a complete rearrangement, and fairly extensive enlargement of the book, and as the work progressed, it appeared plain that it meant not merely a revision, but the making of an entirely new book. With this enlargement of the text, it became necessary to practice the utmost economy of matter, in order to bring the contents within a single volume. This and other considerations prompted the separation of the 'laboratory Guide In Pharmacology, which will be issued as a companion volume. The illustrations have also been omitted wherever the text could be understood without them. A further economy was effected by cur tailing the discussion of the drugs of slight importance, thus leaving more space for the relatively few really important drugs. This is in line with the modern movement for the restriction of the Materia Medica. I am greatly indebted to my friend, Dr. R. A. Hatcher, for valuable help in reading the proofs. This Manual was prepared as a guide for the author's own classes, and the objects sought are to acquaint the student with the general methods Of qualitative analysis and to prepare him to carry out such qualitative tests as the pharmacist may be called upon to make. The course is arranged to include one hour of lecture, one hour of recitation and about three hours of laboratory work per week for one school year. Practice on the analysis of unknown solutions is provided for throughout the course. This is important, as it not only increases the interest of the student in the work but also develops his self-reliance by constantly putting him upon his own responsibility in doing his work and in interpreting his results. The introductory section on the theory Of chemistry may be omitted if it is not necessary for the class to study or review this part of the subject. The Manual is in no sense a reference book, and in general only those things are included that are needed as a guide for the labora tory work, or which may easily be learned in connection with this work. A standard reference book on qualitative analysis will be Of great service while taking the course, and such a reference book is indispensable for anyone who is to pursue the-subject further.
