"An Ordinary Indian" is a tale of one man - alone and aloof - and his experiences. However, he represents a major population of his country. While atrocities were performed against him, the main character of An Ordinary Indian felt there was no need for them to be reported since he seldom reacts. Most affected and vulnerable, his distress, agonies, and worries are over-shadowed behind his efforts to merely survive. His "no reaction" attitude eventually became known to the perpetrator of these atrocities. For instance, one multi-national pharmaceutical company made a medicine, which they wanted to test before marketing contacted medical practitioners. The company needed 400 patients to undergo testing. One man went to a private nursing home for a routine check-up. Not having any trouble, he was given a big list of tests to be taken before his check-up. He contacted his family doctor, and after checking thoroughly, the doctor advised him to forget about the tests. The family doctor was aware that the tests the man had been told to have done were the same as the tests being used before administering the company's trial medicine. The man, when contacted for the drug trials, declined the offer. Unfortunately, most of the tests were done on people who were unaware that their bodies were being utilized for testing unknown medicine - even while being charged for the testing. Usually unaware of the strategies hatched out against him, he is a darling of the political system before elections and an ignored one after that. He watches as things take shape, understands their meanings, is aware of their repercussions, but waits for others to lead before reacting. This is, in essence, the conflict between different categories of common man.

What terms are currently up for debate in Indian society? How have their meanings changed over time? This book highlights key words for modern India in everyday usage as well as in scholarly contexts. Encompassing over 250 key words across a wide range of topics, including aesthetics and ceremony, gender, technology and economics, past memories and future imaginaries, these entries introduce some of the basic concepts that inform the 'cultural unconscious' of the Indian subcontinent in order to translate them into critical tools for literary, political, cultural and cognitive studies. Inspired by Raymond Williams' pioneering exploration of English culture and society through the study of keywords, Keywords for India brings together more than 200 leading sub-continental scholars to form a polyphonic collective. Their sustained engagement with an incredibly diverse set of words enables a fearless interrogation of the panoply, the multitude, the shape-shifter that is 'India'. Through its close investigation and unpacking of words, this book investigates the various intellectual possibilities on offer within the Indian subcontinent at the beginning of a fraught new millennium desperately in need of fresh vocabularies. In this sense, Keywords for India presents the world with many emancipatory memes from India.

With a compassionate realism and narrative sweep that recall the work of Charles Dickens, this magnificent novel captures all the cruelty and corruption, dignity and heroism, of India. The time is 1975. The place is an unnamed city by the sea. The government has just declared a State of Emergency, in whose upheavals four strangers--a spirited widow, a young student uprooted from his idyllic hill station, and two tailors who have fled the caste violence of their native village--will be thrust together, forced to share one cramped apartment and an uncertain future. As the characters move from distrust to friendship and from friendship to love, A Fine Balance creates an enduring panorama of the human spirit in an inhuman state.

Uniform Civil Code For India written by Shimon Shetreet and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-18 with Law categories.

Article 44 of The Constitution of India, provides that 'The State shall endeavour to secure for the citizens a Uniform Civil Code throughout the territory of India.' Even after more than six decades, this anticipated code has not been developed or implemented. This book provides a blueprint for alternative frameworks and courses of action, drawing on lessons from comparative context to develop a Uniform Civil Code for India. It explores the interplay between issues of law, culture, and religion in light of various intra-community and inter-community disputes. The book proposes a series of guidelines and considerations to inform this process. The first guideline urges that the process of preparing and implementing a Uniform Civil Code should be the function of the Legislature. The Courts can resolve certain specific points but the comprehensive code is a legislative function and not for judicial resolution. The second guideline suggests the parallel application of civil and religious law. The securing of a Uniform Civil Code must not negate the possibility of citizens availing themselves of religious law-if they so wish. The third guideline advises a gradual application of a Uniform Civil Code. The development of the code should be done topic by topic, chapter by chapter. The fourth guideline is to deploy tools of mediation in both the formation of the code and its implementation. This mediation should take on two forms—intercommunity mediation and individual mediation. The first of these two relates to a dialogue between the communities of India, to advance an agreement upon the substantive provisions of the Uniform Civil Code. The second relates to mediation between individuals, in occasions where dispute arises in the realm of personal law.
