From ca. 1300 a new genre developed in European literature, Neo-Latin drama. Building on medieval drama, vernacular theatre and classical drama, it spread around Europe. It was often used as a means to educate young boys in Latin, in acting and in moral issues. Comedies, tragedies and mixed forms were written. The Societas Jesu employed Latin drama in their education and public relations on a large scale. They had borrowed the concept of this drama from the humanist and Protestant gymnasia, and perfected it to a multi media show. However, the genre does not receive the attention that it deserves. In this volume, a historical overview of this genre is given, as well as analyses of separate plays. From the 16th century onwards, Europeans encountered languages in the Americas, Africa, and Asia which were radically different from any of the languages of the Old World. Missionaries were in the forefront of this encounter: in order to speak to potential converts, they needed to learn local languages. A great wealth of missionary grammars survives from the 16th century onwards. Some of these are precious records of the languages they document, and all of them witness their authors’ attempts to develop the methods of grammatical description with which they were familiar, to accommodate dramatically new linguistic features.This book is the first monograph covering the whole Portuguese grammatical tradition outside Portugal. Its aim is to provide an integrated description, analysis and evaluation of the missionary grammars which were written in Portuguese. Between them, these grammars covered a huge range of languages: in Asia, Tamil, four Indo-Aryan languages and Japanese; in Brazil, Kipeá and Tupinambá; in Africa and the African diaspora, Kimbundu and Sena (from the modern Angola and Mozambique respectively).Each text is placed in its historical context, and its linguistic context is analyzed, with particular attention to orthography, the parts of speech system, morphology and syntax. Whenever possible, pedagogical features of the grammars are discussed, together with their treatment of language variation and pragmatics, and the evidence they provide for the missionaries’ attitude towards the languages they studied.

O livro Direito Penal e os Direitos Sociais dedica-se à análise dos direitos sociais e o Direito Penal. Investiga a doutrina da função promocional do Direito Penal que ganhou fôlego no Brasil com a promulgação da Constituição de 1988, refundando a República sob a forma de um Estado Democrático de Direito (Estado Social e Democrático de Direito), contemplando não apenas os direitos fundamentais tipicamente individuais como aqueles de ordem coletiva e difusa, aí incluídos os direitos sociais. Destarte, procura saber se o Direito Penal não teria como escapar da necessidade de releitura das suas funções, permitindo-se o seu uso para a concretização dos direitos sociais e promoção da justiça social. A despeito do conjunto de temas que formaram o objeto da presente pesquisa, ela guiou-se pelas seguintes indagações: A função promocional do Direito Penal encontraria abrigo na dimensão atual do Estado Social e Democrático de Direito? Estariam sendo respeitados os princípios penais clássicos nessa perspectiva promocional no Direito Penal? Teria o Direito Penal adequação para exercer a nova função que lhe foi atribuída? A hipótese é de que a doutrina da função promocional do Direito Penal, embora afirme partir de bases constitucionais, parece não as possuir, pelo que a pesquisa procura contribuir no aclaramento dessa situação, inclusive para determinar se há (in)adequação teleológica e instrumental do Direito Penal para concretização de direitos sociais e promoção da justiça social.
