Excerpt from A Pagan of the Alleghanies Along the walls of the Alleghanies that stand to the west had crept winds of the south with the kisses of spring in them. Faintest of tender greens and uncertain reds of the new leaves were creeping out along that part of the mountain that rests in little broken waves, as the gown of a woman lies in folds about the feet ere the beginning of those long lines of grace that reach upward to curve of throat or hooded head. Only to the feet had crept this youngest lover of the seasons - so young in days, but so wise in the lore of winning. Up to those hooded heights he dare not leap, they had been so lately dashed by autumn's tears that weaken, beaten and ravished by the cruel passions of winter, and stripped bare with the life-blood of the forest driven in terror to the heart. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from The Pagan Thus it followed that his daughter, Marthe, although -she kept his house and shared his meals, was almost a stranger to him, while Peter Mason, on the contrary, inasmuch as he was intimately connected with the firm and its fortunes, stood well-nigh as his son. Excerpt from Pagan Ireland There is an old tale told in Ireland of a loveable and bright and handsome youth named Donn-bo, who was the best singer of "songs of idleness," and the best teller of "King-stories" in the world. He could tell a tale of each king who reigned at Tara from the Tale of the Destruction of Dind Righ, when Cobthach Coelbreg was killed, down to the kings who reigned in his own time. One night before a battle, the warriors said: "Make minstrelsy for us, O Donn-bo." But Donn-bo said: "No word at all will come on my lips to-night; therefore, for this night let the King-buffoon of Ireland amuse you. But to-morrow at this hour, in whatever place they and I shall be, I will make minstrelsy for the fighting-men." For the warriors had said that unless Donn-bo went with them on that hosting, not one of them would go. On the evening of the morrow Donn-bo lay dead, his fair young body stretched across the body of the King of Erin, for he had died in defending his chief. But his head had rolled away and lay amongst a wisp of growing rushes by the water-side. At the feasting of the army on that night, a warrior said: "Where is Donn-bo, that he may make minstrelsy for us, and tell us the King-stories of Erin?" Excerpt from Inveresk Parish Lore From Pagan Times A study of these old-world ways as they existed at Inveresk has yielded much delight to the author, and in response to frequent invitations he now offers some of the fruit he has gathered as a contribution to local history, not without hope that others may find in it some of the interest and pleasure he has experienced. Access to Parish and Burgh Records has enabled him to embody many facts never before published, and an endeavour has been made to convey an idea of how valuable these Records are. In the compilation of the present work numerous and scarce publications in the Advocates' and other libraries have been consulted, and information kindly communicated by personal friends is here gratefully acknowledged. Excerpt from Pagan Ireland, an Archaeological Sketch: A Handbook of Irish Pre-Christian Antiquities The descriptions which follow, of ancient re mains traceable to Pagan times, are derived from the accounts of various explorations and surveys made, in each branch, by competent arch&ologists, and are here reproduced - ih many instances in the very words of the writers. The Bibliography at the end of the volume comprises a list of upwards of one thousand papers and works, by about three hundred differ ent authors. Ah idea may be thus conveyed of the vast scaffolding erected for the building of a comprehensive guide to pre-christian archae ology. In such a plethora of literature the principal difficulty lay in selecting the best and most suitable material for the purpose.
