The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the experiences of African American women superintendents in North Carolina. The theory guiding this study was Collins’ black feminist thought, as it clarifies and calls attention to the analysis of ideas and experiences specific to African American women, which relates to African American women superintendents in North Carolina. The central question of the study is “How do African American women describe their lived experiences in superintendent positions in the state of North Carolina?” This qualitative phenomenological study included six current and/or past African American women North Carolina superintendents. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews, an online focus group, and a writing prompt providing advice to aspiring superintendents. Data analysis involved the coding of themes gleaned from interviews, an online focus group, writing prompts, and lived experiences shared by participants. The findings of this study suggest a number of preparation steps based on the review of the literature and the results of this study. Preparation, including diversifying learning opportunities and the acquisition of a doctorate degree, are recommended by the study. Other preparation suggestions urge women to get support systems and a mentor. Participants expressed the importance of participating in experiences that will provide exposure to the superintendency.

This transformative phenomenological study involved exploring how Black females serving as superintendents in the United States experienced the journey into their roles, the state of the school districts as they began their roles, and their lived experiences as superintendents. I used Black feminist thought as part of answering the following research questions: (a) How do Black female superintendents describe their personal and professional lived experiences while ascending to the position of school district superintendent? (b) How do Black females appointed to the role of school district superintendent describe their lived experiences with leading a school district? Black feminist thought is an evolution of standpoint theory, which challenges the exclusivity and chauvinism of the dominant culture. This study followed a phenomenological approach, the primary method involved conducting semi-structured interviews. This study was comprised of 11 Black female superintendents across the United States who participated in one-on-one Zoom-based interviews. This transformative phenomenological study captured the lived experience of the Black female superintendents that have successfully navigated the prevailing phenomena of glass ceiling, glass cliff, and gatekeeping provided a platform for aspiring Black female superintendents to glean from their predecessors’ experiences. The 11 participants’ responses to questions in their individual interviews revealed the following five themes that answered the first research as (a) preparation, (b) exceptionalism, (c) sponsorship, (d) spirituality, and (e) need to check every box. The five themes that emerged for answering the second research question and describing the 11 Black women’s superintendent experiences were (a) diverse school boards, (b) turnaround school districts, (c) equity warriors, (d) sacrifice, and (e) support system. The participants disclosed that the discriminatory practice that remains evident in the role as superintendent is the gender role expectations that continues to drive Black female superintendents from the profession. The participants were hopeful that their leadership could change American public education for the better as they promoted educational excellence among all students. Thus, the participants’ rich narratives led to implications for policy and practice as well as opportunities for further investigation

"Since the late 1980s, there has been research on the topic of female superintendents that has addressed white women and minority women alike; however, research indicates that there are marked differences regarding the issue of access as it pertains to this level of professional leadership for African American women. Due to the exclusion of their voices in readily accessible literature, and despite a growing number of dissertations on similar topics, the black female educational executive's voice has been all but overlooked. An African American female's role as a school district leader is greatly informed by race and gender. Therefore, these roles must be critically studied through the lenses of race and gender to be useful for African American women. This study explores the career experiences of 13 African American women in district level leadership positions, including seven non-superintendent district leaders and six superintendents. This qualitative study, using the lens of Black Feminist Thought, analyzes the similarities and differences of career experiences for African American female district executives, along with the effects of professional and personal support systems, on their respective experiences. The road to district level leadership and particularly the superintendency is a different road for African American women, and in order to increase access for this underrepresented group, their experiences must be shared. This study was written by an African American woman, featuring African American women, and for African American women as the target audience. Practitioners, gatekeepers, and school district development institutions can use findings and implications of this study in order to increase awareness and access for those often overlooked in school district leadership, particularly the superintendency."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore and gain an in-depth understanding of the personal, professional, and sociocultural experiences of African American female school leaders in suburban school districts. These school districts were identified as suburban locations because of low to no student poverty, stellar performances on standardized tests, high graduation and college going rates, and champion academic and athletic team honors. This qualitative study employed a phenomenological design to allow the researcher the opportunity to investigate and gather data through open-ended, face-to-face, one hour interviews with study participants. Three theoretical frameworks---critical race theory, racial identity development theory, and black feminist thought theory---were utilized for this qualitative study. Ten African American female school leaders serving as assistant principals, principals, and central office administrators from four suburban school districts in the southeast region of the United States were involved in this study. Each district was located only miles from a major metropolis. After data analysis, seven themes emerged from the thick, rich descriptions provided through study participants' interviews. The seven themes were (a) race and gender in school leadership, (b) caring for family and self, (c) resilience and spirituality, (d) education and upward mobility, (e) mentoring and networking, (f) effective communication and positive working relationships, and (g) child advocacy and community partnerships. Study participants had a multiplicity of positive and challenging experiences as African American female school leaders. They were resilient and spiritually-grounded which aided them in answering the call to leadership. The study of the lived personal, professional, and sociocultural experiences of African American female suburban school leaders may be helpful to educational researchers and practitioners, colleges and universities, boards of education, school districts, schools, and all African American females who aspire to become school leaders in suburban school districts. By exploring the lives of these school leaders, greater insights may be gained to open the door to this underrepresented population. This research may be valuable for professional development planning and educational leadership programs with the objective of recruiting and retaining more African American female suburban school leaders.

The nation has undergone a monumental increase in population growth over the past 20 years among minority groups (U.S. Census Bureau, 2010), especially among minority students. Despite this population growth, the growth in minority school leaders such as superintendents, and principals have experienced a much slower increase and a much slower increase among African American women leaders (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2005, 2018). The population of African American women in urban school K-12 leadership positions and their self-efficacy in their ascent into their positions is an understudied phenomenon. Their voices are often excluded from the research literature. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the intersectionality of race and gender of six African American women in urban school K-12 leadership positions to garner an understanding of the essence of their lived experiences, specifically; regarding their self-efficacy, challenges, and support, that influences their ascension into their leadership positions. This study took place in a Northeast Ohio metropolitan area. The aim was to understand their self-efficacy and development as leaders. The stories of African American women in urban school K-12 leadership regarding the challenges, support, and resilience on their ascent into their leadership positions could assist in helping aspiring female educators, particularly African American women educators as they seek leadership positions in urban education.

African-American women leading school districts as public school superintendents of schools is rare. It is even more infrequent for multiple African-American women to serve in the position of superintendent of schools in the same state. This historical qualitative study investigated and documented the history of African-American women who served in the position of public superintendent of schools in the state of Missouri. Research on the topic of African-American female superintendents is scarce. This study contributed to the growing body of research focused on the personal stories and experiences of African-American women who served and continue to serve as superintendents. The researcher documented factors and experiences the participants perceived as influential in their ascent to the position. Seven African-American females, either former or current superintendents in the state of Missouri, participated in this study. Personal interviews, along with a semi-structured interview schedule, served as the primary data collection method used to capture data for this study. A Black feminist thought lens was used to examine barriers and experiences of oppression. Findings from this research identified the participants’ various paths to the superintendency, suggested that barriers of race, gender and oppression existed, highlighted perceived accomplishments, provided explanations for why multiple African-American females have served as public school superintendents in the state of Missouri, and proposed recommendations for aspiring African-American females interested in becoming a superintendent.

"This study explores African American mothers' special education decision making process and how their decisions are influenced by the politics of containment--racist power structures embedded into American society which seek to monitor, classify, and control--and how they endeavor to resist these power structures. Specifically, I am interested in how some African American mothers are included or excluded from the decision making process and what implications this inclusion or exclusion may have on the disproportionate representation of African American children in special education. This study relies on phenomenological, qualitative research methodology based on a conceptual framework with roots in black feminist theory, critical race theory and Foucault's theory on power. Combined, these theories address how the politics of containment influences African American mothers' experiences making decisions for their children in special education. In order to thoroughly examine the social, political, cultural, and historical contexts of this phenomenon, this includes historical, theoretical and empirical components. Taken together, the data presented here suggests that in spite of their advocacy efforts African American mothers receive limited power in the special education decision making process."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

This qualitative study utilized a phenomenological approach to discover how African American female superintendents in Virginia integrated spirituality into their leadership practices. The struggles and experiences of these women as a population have been uniquely marginalized by both race and gender. These distinct influences have resulted in the development of generations of women who freely proclaim to be grounded in the spiritual. To investigate this topic, data were collected in face-to-face interviews conducted on site in the school division where each superintendent was employed. The data were analyzed using a modified version of Moustakas as proposed by Creswell (2007). Once the interviews were coded for themes, two distinctive themes emerged regarding the leadership practices of these women and the integration of spirituality. Theme One addressed the characteristics of the participants' spiritual belief systems and their relationship with God according to how they conceptualized the abstract concept of spirituality and used it in their professional decision-making processes. Theme Two delineated more precisely how these women used their personal beliefs to lead from a spiritual center. The discoveries that surfaced via this study add greater validation to Benefiel's (2005) theory pertaining to spiritual leadership, which emphasizes the actions of the leader who relies on spiritual leadership. This leader-centered perspective contrasts with Fry and Whittington (2005), who suggested that spiritual leadership cannot be understood without also considering the perspectives of those being led. In summary, this study found that each of these women led from a spiritual center and professed to practice spiritual leadership. In other words, they made and carried out decisions that resulted in the fostering of successful school divisions without compromising their biblical principles. They believed that a leader must be more than a managerial or an instructional leader. A leader must lead from within, while at the same time considering the affective aspects of leadership that encompass the whole person and the needs of the entire organization.
