Excerpt from A Plain Examination of Socialism In Book I., I state certain fundamental facts of human nature, as well as certain economic principles which I believe to have the character of immutable natural laws. In Book II. Is given a brief description of the present system of human society with respect to its economic dealings; the socialistic attack on this present system, the weakness of the objections thereto, and the insuperable difficulties of remedying them. In Book III we step into the socialists' camp, take up their general proposals, examine them in detail, and show what, if anything, they must lead to. I have endeavoured to treat the subject strictly from an economic standpoint, believing that socialism in any form can only be combated successfully by presenting valid economic arguments against it. Excerpt from A Critical Examination of Socialism The subject is one, however, which, if it were to be treated exhaustively, would demand a series of volumes rather than a series Of chapters, and the arguments here set forth are written in a species Of short-hand, and at almost every turn are susceptible Of indefinite amplification. But for practical pur poses a short book which is suggestive is likely to be more use than a long one, whose argument, while more complete, might be less easily grasped and less easily available for controversial and educative purposes. What I contemplate doing at some future time is to reproduce the main argument Of this volume in a more purely constructive and less controversial form, and, having thus sketched its various parts in outline, as an introduction, to elaborate each part separately in subsequent portions Of the work. In especial, the various forms and gradations Of individual manual labor would be analyzed more fully than it has been possible to analyze them here; and a Similarly minute treatment would be applied to the directive faculties, from their simplest and most rudimentary up to their highest forms. The dynamics of motive, their relation to the general structure Of society, the difierent kinds Of life and effort imposed by nature on any society that aims at any kind of civilization, and many other subjects which need not be here specified, would all, in the same way, receive separate treatment. A Plain And Concise Explanation Of Scientific Socialism Classic Reprint written by Thomas Bersford and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-11 with Political Science categories.

Excerpt from A Plain and Concise Explanation of Scientific Socialism It has been stated that though millions of people play at chess, there are but few real chess players. A like statement might be made of Socialists, for though millions of votes (the total Socialist vote of all countries is about six millions) are cast for Socialism, there are but few scientific Socialists and there are comparatively few really practical scientific works upon the subject and fewer still are the scientific books which the average working-man can understand. The Socialist movement is essentially a working class movement, yet those three masterpieces of Socialist philosophy - The Communist Manifesto, Socialism from Utopia, to Science, and Capital, abound with abstruse and technical terms, which are not merely confusing, but are positively unintelligible to most workingmen. In preparing the following pages, my object was not so much to give an outline of Socialism, as to help students to grasp the essence of larger and completer works upon the subject. If I have failed in this, I will try again, for I am convinced that when a propertiless wage-worker refuses to believe in Socialism, it is because he does not understand it; the fault lies not with the principles, but with the manner of explaining them. I have endeavored to combine brevity with the simplest language so as to be easily understood by workingmen. I am aware that in this endeavor, elegance is often sacrificed, but believe that in a pamphlet of this kind absolute clearness is of greater importance that elegance of language. Some of the definitions given are my own, but I think they will be acceptable to scientific Socialists. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Short Study of State Socialism The limits and purpose of this little book would be exceeded if any attempt were made at a detailed account, either of the origin of Socialism, or of the various forms which it has assumed. To trace the growth of the principles upon which Socialism is founded would involve an examination of historical development and would require a separate volume.* Our concern here is with the fact of Socialism. For the purpose of an intelligent understanding of our subject only a brief historical survey is necessary. After that it will be essential to come to some understanding as to what Socialism precisely is, for at present the word is applied most loosely. "New Worlds for Old" (1908), which appeared in some later editions with the subtitle "A Plain Account of Modern Socialism," was one of several books and pamphlets that famed author and Nobel Literature Prize winner H. G. Wells wrote about the socialist future in the period 1901-1908, while he was engaged in an effort to reform the Fabian Society. As a result of Wells's earlier books and articles, he was "bombarded with requests for article pieces on socialism." Many of the chapters of 'New Worlds for Old' are reworked versions of these pieces.

Reconstructing Marxism written by Erik Olin Wright and has been published by Verso this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with Political Science categories.

Reconstructing Marxism explores fundamental questions about the structure of Marxist theory and its prospects for the future. The authors maintain that the disintegration of the old theoretical unity of classical Marxism is in part responsible for what is commonly called the "crisis of Marxism." Only a reconstructed Marxism can come to terms with this disintegration. Addressing a range of problems in historical materialism and class analysis, the authors compare historical materialism with Darwinian evolutionary theory, and identify what is distinctively "historical" in Marx's theory of history. Through an evaluation of G.A. Cohen's defense and Anthony Giddens's critique of historical materialism they suggest what a plausible, yet still Marxist. theory of history might be. They analyze the relationship of microanalysis to macro theory and the assignment of causal primacy in explanations, and present a general assessment of the current state of Marxist theory and the prospects for its analytical reconstruction. Distinguished by the clarity of its presentation, the analytical rigour of its argument and its concern with fundamental philosophical and sociological issues, Reconstructing Marxism advances, at this critical juncture in the history of Marxism, a challenging new research programme.
