"This book on Direct Analysis is a first attempt to determine precisely what goes on during this process, and the validity of the many claims, criticisms, theories and myths which have grown up around it. It does not provide a final answer to any questions; but it sheds a clearer light on them than anything that has yet been written, whether by Dr. Rosen or by his critics. It describes clearly and often vividly what actually transpires on the surface, while providing insight into preconscious and unconscious processes as well. At the same time this report clears the air for future objective studies of Rosen's work by dispelling many myths and popular cliches about Rosen and direct analysis, including some illusions about the work which Rosen himself harbors and fosters"--Pref. Successful Drug-Free Psychotherapy for Schizophrenia offers a close examination of how to treat schizophrenic patients using psychotherapy rather than drugs, applying derivatives of psychodynamic principles in treating patients. The author provides real examples throughout of how therapists can resolve patients’ emotional conflicts with better outcomes than by resorting to drugs. She presents methods that allow patients to avoid the neurological damage and obesity that can often result from the use of anti-psychotic drugs. The practical techniques and advice this book offers enable therapists to resolve the chaos of schizophrenia using psychotherapy alone. Theoretically, this book can also be useful for work with depressives.

Experimentation And Innovation In Psychotherapy written by Harold Greenwald and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-05 with Psychology categories.

After a long period of relatively slow change and development, the practice of psychotherapy entered a phase of vigorous experimentation in the 1960s. Greatly increased public recognition of the role of psychological approaches has brought about a dramatic upsurge of demand for mental health services on the part of broader segments of the population than ever before. Many kinds of people now seek aid, and display a greater variety of symptoms and life problems than are recorded in the earlier case-history literature. The professional response to this new demand markedly increased the professions creativity and imagination, as this volume outlines. While it is difficult to devise a precise category to cover all forms of such experimentation in psychotherapy, one major characteristic has been an increase in activity. The non-directive or client-centered therapist frequently speaks almost as much as his client, yet he is not considered active, since he attempts to limit his communication to the reflection of the clients feelings.More frequently an attempt is made to distinguish between insight-oriented therapies and active therapies in terms of differing goals.Active psychotherapy is seen as being concerned with techniques that focus directly on the removal of symptoms, such as anxiety or maladaptive overt behavior. The need to establish a clear dichotomy between insight and behavior modification has often been challenged: many of the therapists who stress insight do so in the belief that increased insight, no matter how arrived at, will modify overt behavioral anxiety. Experimentation in Psychotherapy exposes the reader to a wide variety of therapies. Although changes in treatment methods, and a more short-term orientation, have limited some future developments in the field, this volume admirably describes the techniques traditional therapists can effectively employ, given the patient's strengths and limitations.

Transactional Analysis Of Schizophrenia written by Zefiro Mellacqua and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-06-04 with Psychology categories.

In Transactional Analysis of Schizophrenia: The Naked Self, Zefiro Mellacqua presents a full assessment of the relevance and value of transactional analysis in understanding, conceptualizing and treating schizophrenia in contemporary clinical settings. Opening with a review of Eric Berne’s ideas, Mellacqua applies theory to the understanding and psychotherapeutic treatment of people suffering from first-episode schizophrenia and to those already living with more long-lasting psychotic levels of self-disturbance. The chapters address a series of crucial methodological themes, including the need for both intensive and extensive analytic sessions; the therapist’s tolerance of uncertainty and not knowing; the informative quality of both therapist’s and patient’s embodiment(s); the emergence of the transference-countertransference relationship; the link between silent transactions and unconscious communication; dream analysis; and the value of regular supervisions. Mellacqua’s approach incorporates meetings with family and caregivers, as well as emphasising multidisciplinary work with patients in a variety of settings, such as in hospitals, outpatient clinics, and psychiatric home treatment. The book is illustrated with engaging clinical case studies throughout, which illuminate the schizophrenic experience and provide examples of how these tools can be used to help patients. Transactional Analysis of Schizophrenia demonstrates how those who suffer from acute schizophrenia, especially those at their very first episode of psychosis, can make an effective recovery and live a satisfying life through the therapeutic application of transactional analysis. It will be essential reading for transactional analysts, psychodynamically oriented psychotherapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, academics and all mental health professionals working with people suffering from schizophrenic psychoses. Inevitably, every psychotherapist has some experience with severely disturbed patients. Consequently, they will turn with excitement to this important new book which is a stunning attempt by two knowledgeable, persevering psychotherapists to present their understanding and sound therapeutic approach to these difficult and challenging patients. The authors argue that the treatment of choice is clearly psychotherapy and that such treatment can be successful and as long lasting for schizophrenic patients as it is for neurotic patients, but the journey may be longer and it may take more time to traverse. The task of therapy is to untangle the past from the present to make the future conceivable. The volume provides a thorough historical overview of the theoretical and clinical approaches to the problem of schizophrenia, including the views of leading contemporary clinicians on the topic. In general, the major clinical controversies have been regarded as issues of whether to focus on past, present or future; reality or fantasy; affects; exploration or relationship; whether the therapist should be active or passive; and how to handle regression. The authors argue that these are the wrong issues. They say that the task of therapy is to untangle the past from the present to make the future conceivable. Reality and fantasy are intertwined and must both be dealt with. Affects are central to all therapy, and emphasis on anger, despair, loneliness, terror, and shame are all necessary, as is the clarification of affect, and the acceptance of positive affect. Activity versus passivity is again in the wrong question; the right one is what action is helpful, when it is helpful, and when is not doing anything helpful? Regression is inevitable; should one accept it fully or try to limit it? This has no general answer other than do what is necessary (i.e., unavoidable) or most helpful to a particular patient at a particular time.
