This fine book by Herb Clemens quickly became a favorite of many algebraic geometers when it was first published in 1980. It has been popular with novices and experts ever since. It is written as a book of ``impressions'' of a journey through the theory of complex algebraic curves. Many topics of compelling beauty occur along the way. A cursory glance at the subjects visited reveals a wonderfully eclectic selection, from conics and cubics to theta functions, Jacobians, and questions of moduli. By the end of the book, the theme of theta functions becomes clear, culminating in the Schottky problem. The author's intent was to motivate further study and to stimulate mathematical activity. The attentive reader will learn much about complex algebraic curves and the tools used to study them. The book can be especially useful to anyone preparing a course on the topic of complex curves or anyone interested in supplementing his/her reading.

This is a book of "impressions" of a journey through the theory of com plex algebraic curves. It is neither self-contained, balanced, nor particularly tightly organized. As with any notebook made on a journey, what appears is that which strikes the writer's fancy. Some topics appear because of their compelling intrinsic beauty. Others are left out because, for all their impor tance, the traveler found them boring or was too dull or lazy to give them their due. Looking back at the end of the journey, one can see that a common theme in fact does emerge, as is so often the case; that theme is the theory of theta functions. In fact very much of the material in the book is prepara tion for our study of the final topic, the so-called Schottky problem. More than once, in fact, we tear ourselves away from interesting topics leading elsewhere and return to our main route.

Complex Algebraic Curves written by Frances Clare Kirwan and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992-02-20 with Mathematics categories.

This development of the theory of complex algebraic curves was one of the peaks of nineteenth century mathematics. They have many fascinating properties and arise in various areas of mathematics, from number theory to theoretical physics, and are the subject of much research. By using only the basic techniques acquired in most undergraduate courses in mathematics, Dr. Kirwan introduces the theory, observes the algebraic and topological properties of complex algebraic curves, and shows how they are related to complex analysis.

Complex analysis is one of the most central subjects in mathematics. It is compelling and rich in its own right, but it is also remarkably useful in a wide variety of other mathematical subjects, both pure and applied. This book is different from others in that it treats complex variables as a direct development from multivariable real calculus. As each new idea is introduced, it is related to the corresponding idea from real analysis and calculus. The text is rich with examples andexercises that illustrate this point. The authors have systematically separated the analysis from the topology, as can be seen in their proof of the Cauchy theorem. The book concludes with several chapters on special topics, including full treatments of special functions, the prime number theorem, and the Bergman kernel. The authors also treat $Hp$ spaces and Painleve's theorem on smoothness to the boundary for conformal maps. This book is a text for a first-year graduate course in complex analysis. It is an engaging and modern introduction to the subject, reflecting the authors' expertise both as mathematicians and as expositors.

This volume of the Encyclopaedia contains three contributions in the field of complex analysis; on mean periodicity and convolutionequations, Yang-Mills fields and the Radon-Penrose transform, and stringtheory. It is immensely useful to graduate students and researchers in complex analysis, differential geometry, quantum field theory, string theory and general relativity.

Textbooks, even excellent ones, are a reflection of their times. Form and content of books depend on what the students know already, what they are expected to learn, how the subject matter is regarded in relation to other divisions of mathematics, and even how fashionable the subject matter is. It is thus not surprising that we no longer use such masterpieces as Hurwitz and Courant's Funktionentheorie or Jordan's Cours d'Analyse in our courses. The last two decades have seen a significant change in the techniques used in the theory of functions of one complex variable. The important role played by the inhomogeneous Cauchy-Riemann equation in the current research has led to the reunification, at least in their spirit, of complex analysis in one and in several variables. We say reunification since we think that Weierstrass, Poincare, and others (in contrast to many of our students) did not consider them to be entirely separate subjects. Indeed, not only complex analysis in several variables, but also number theory, harmonic analysis, and other branches of mathematics, both pure and applied, have required a reconsidera tion of analytic continuation, ordinary differential equations in the complex domain, asymptotic analysis, iteration of holomorphic functions, and many other subjects from the classic theory of functions of one complex variable. This ongoing reconsideration led us to think that a textbook incorporating some of these new perspectives and techniques had to be written.

The book provides an introduction to the theory of functions of several complex variables and their singularities, with special emphasis on topological aspects. The topics include Riemann surfaces, holomorphic functions of several variables, classification and deformation of singularities, fundamentals of differential topology, and the topology of singularities. The aim of the book is to guide the reader from the fundamentals to more advanced topics of recent research. All the necessary prerequisites are specified and carefully explained. The general theory is illustrated by various examples and applications.

Riemann Surfaces By Way Of Complex Analytic Geometry written by Dror Varolin and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-08-10 with Mathematics categories.

This book establishes the basic function theory and complex geometry of Riemann surfaces, both open and compact. Many of the methods used in the book are adaptations and simplifications of methods from the theories of several complex variables and complex analytic geometry and would serve as excellent training for mathematicians wanting to work in complex analytic geometry. After three introductory chapters, the book embarks on its central, and certainly most novel, goal of studying Hermitian holomorphic line bundles and their sections. Among other things, finite-dimensionality of spaces of sections of holomorphic line bundles of compact Riemann surfaces and the triviality of holomorphic line bundles over Riemann surfaces are proved, with various applications. Perhaps the main result of the book is Hormander's Theorem on the square-integrable solution of the Cauchy-Riemann equations. The crowning application is the proof of the Kodaira and Narasimhan Embedding Theorems for compact and open Riemann surfaces. The intended reader has had first courses in real and complex analysis, as well as advanced calculus and basic differential topology (though the latter subject is not crucial). As such, the book should appeal to a broad portion of the mathematical and scientific community. This book is the first to give a textbook exposition of Riemann surface theory from the viewpoint of positive Hermitian line bundles and Hormander $\bar \partial$ estimates. It is more analytical and PDE oriented than prior texts in the field, and is an excellent introduction to the methods used currently in complex geometry, as exemplified in J. P. Demailly's online but otherwise unpublished book ``Complex analytic and differential geometry.'' I used it for a one quarter course on Riemann surfaces and found it to be clearly written and self-contained. It not only fills a significant gap in the large textbook literature on Riemann surfaces but is also rather indispensible for those who would like to teach the subject from a differential geometric and PDE viewpoint. --Steven Zelditch

In this text, the reader will learn that all the basic functions that arise in calculus—such as powers and fractional powers, exponentials and logs, trigonometric functions and their inverses, as well as many new functions that the reader will meet—are naturally defined for complex arguments. Furthermore, this expanded setting leads to a much richer understanding of such functions than one could glean by merely considering them in the real domain. For example, understanding the exponential function in the complex domain via its differential equation provides a clean path to Euler's formula and hence to a self-contained treatment of the trigonometric functions. Complex analysis, developed in partnership with Fourier analysis, differential equations, and geometrical techniques, leads to the development of a cornucopia of functions of use in number theory, wave motion, conformal mapping, and other mathematical phenomena, which the reader can learn about from material presented here. This book could serve for either a one-semester course or a two-semester course in complex analysis for beginning graduate students or for well-prepared undergraduates whose background includes multivariable calculus, linear algebra, and advanced calculus.
