Books on the pedagogy of arithmetic which have contributed to improvement in methods of teaching this subject may be divided into three classes. Some seek to give a general survey of the aims and methods of teaching arithmetic, concerning themselves with no details in any specific topic, and leaving it to each teacher to apply the general method to the specific problems of his grade work. Other books give the philosophy and psychology of mathematics in the hope that a clearer comprehension of the basic concepts of arithmetic by the teacher will inevitably lead to more effective methods of instruction. The third group of books devotes itself merely to the task of giving remedial devices to meet specific teaching difficulties. General methods of teaching any subject may set forth ideals of instruction without regard to possibility of attainment. Specific devices tend to establish stereotyped forms to be followed slavishly without a comprehension of the basic principles. The writer has sought to evolve a book that is eclectic in aim. The early chapters study critically the values of arithmetic, the principles governing the organization of the course of study, and the psychology underlying sound method in arithmetic. Excerpt from A Study of Mathematical Education Including the Teaching of Arithmetic This study is based upon twenty years' experience of school and college education ranging through all grades, including the very elements of counting and form in the kindergarten, the mathematics appropriate to the school, and the standard required of students for an Honours Degree in our universities. Conclusions based on class-teaching and those arrived at by experiment and by a private study of the individual have served both to correct and to supplement each other. The substance of the present volume has also formed the introductory part of a course of lectures on the teaching of mathematics, which, for many years, I have given in various institutions to classes of teachers from almost all types and grades of schools, elementary as well as secondary and tertiary. It could be supplemented, of course, by material from other chapters. Again, Course 5 (Calculus) aiscusses the differential and integral calculus more or less from the beginnings of these theories, and proceeds through functions of several real variables, functions of a complex variable, and topics of real analysis such as the implicit function theorem. We would, however, like to make a further point with regard to the appropriateness of our text in course work. We emphasized in the Introduction to the original edition that, in the main, we had in mind the reader who had already met the topics once and wished to review them in the light of his (or her) increased knowledge and mathematical maturity. We therefore believe that our book could form a suitable basis for American graduate courses in the mathematical sciences, especially those prerequisites for a Master's degree.
