Excerpt from The Venetian School of Painting Many visits to Venice have brought home to me the fact that there exists, in English at least, no 'work which deals as a whole with the Venetian School and its masters. Biographical catalogues there are in plenty, but these, though useful for reference, say little to readers who are not already acquainted with the painters whose career and works are briefly recorded. Lives of individual masters abound, but however excel lent and essential these may be to an advanced study of the school, the volumes containing them make too large a library to be easily carried about, and a great deal of reading and assimilation is required to set each painter in his place in the long story. Crowe and Caval caselle's History of Painting in North Italy still remains our sheet anchor; but it is lengthy, over full of detail of minor painters, and lacks the. Excerpt from The Venetian Printing Press: An Historical Study Based Upon Documents for the Most Part Hitherto Unpublished His book consists of two parts. First, an historical study of the Venetian Printing Press from its origin down to the fall of the Republic, based, in a large degree, upon the documents which form the second part of the book. In this study I trace the history of the Venetian press from its introduction, through the sixteenth century - noting especially how press legislation grew up, preceded by custom and practice, and then formulated in law; how the government dealt with such questions as copyright, protection, and censorship; how the Guild of Printers and Booksellers was founded and governed; how the book trade came under the influence of the Index and the Inquisitorial censorship, and how the Republic endeavoured to protect the trade, thereby involving itself in a long struggle with the Church of Rome - till we reach the slow decline of the Venetian press through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, in spite of the legis lation which was designed to preserve it. I have called the work a study, rather than a history of the Venetian press, because I feel that a true history of that press would require far more bibliographical knowledge than I possess. This book will have fulfilled its purpose if it serves as a pioneer along a line of research which has never been adequately explored, except at its beginning, and then almost entirely from a bibliographical, not from an historical or legal point of View. The second part of the book contains the documents which served as a basis for the study. By far the larger part are published now for the first time. In some cases I have reprinted documents which have already seen the light, because 1 know that they are difficult of access to English students. These documents fall into several groups. Excerpt from The Old Venetian Palaces and Old Venetian Folk Ir there is one experience more delightful than a first visit to Venice, it is a second; the urgent pre-occupation of the move peregrin to pretermit nothing of importance amid the wealth of beauty and historic interest offered to his gaze, gives place to a calmer enjoyment; objects fall into their due perspective; ideal preconceptions are corrected, and the sojourner may turn to the study and appreciation of some particular phase of the manifold attractions of the city: to such returning lovers the ensuing pages are directed. Excerpt from Venetian Studies Hic vobis, aquatilium avium more, domus est. But no eye noted the first low huts, built Of mud bricks, nor measured those light and shallow boats which stood, stabled like horses, at the door Of every house; no historian traced the internal growth Of these fishing stations; and we have been left to suppose what has Often been stated, that the refugees from the mainland, flying before the frequent foreign occupations, found the islands, where they sought Shelter, deserted mud banks out at sea. This could not have been the case. Venice was not peopled solely by exiles from Aquileia, Oderzo, Concordia, or Padua. Through the Obscurity Of the records which have reached us, we can trace a long-continued struggle raging inside venice, t before a thorough fusion of the original and the immigrant populations could be brought about. There were years Of quarrelling between Malamocco, where the Older race predominated, and Heraclea. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Venice Its History, Art, Industries and Modern Life At Venice, he who is happy, he for whom silence has no charms and who loves the tumult of the world, soon finds his footsteps dogged by limping dulness. But those who have known the sorrows of life return gladly thither; the place is catch ing - every corner or open square recommends itself to the affections. The lightness of the heavens, the even purity of the air, the steely shine of the lagoon, the roseate reflections of the walls, the nights as clear as day, the softness of the Venetian dialect, the trustfulness and placability of the people, their tolerance for all men's humors, and their gentle intercourse, - out of all these results that unseizable and seductive quality which is indeed Venice, which sings at a man's heart, and so possesses and subdues him that he shall feel far from home whenever he is far from the Piazzetta. Excerpt from Venice as an Art City How it soars aloft! Slender and yet imposing in solitary grandeur, unsupported by any other building an island like Venice herself. It was commenced in the tenth century, when Venice had already been for six generations a sea power under her Doges. We ascend, and stand amazed at the be wilderingly beautiful and, at the same time, quaint panorama of the Island City. Gradually we begin to perceive how this pile-supported city and sea-fortress, inaccessible to the mail-clad land-rats of the Lombard, Frankish, and German hordes, was marked by destiny to become a bridge between the lands of the North and the South - the most renowned trade-centre, as well as the headquarters Of shipping and finance, in the Middle Ages; how she also became the treasure-house into which the riches Of three continents poured, and became converted into springs of luxury and wealth.
