"The Treviso Arithmetic, or Arte dell'Abbaco, is an anonymous textbook in commercial arithmetic written in vernacular Venetian and published in Treviso, Italy in 1478. The Treviso Arithmetic is the earliest known printed mathematics book in the West, and one of the first printed European textbooks dealing with a science. The Treviso Arithmetic is a practical book intended for self study and for use in Venetian trade. It is written in vernacular Venetian and communicated knowledge to a large population. It helped to end the monopoly on mathematical knowledge and gave important information to the middle class. It was not written for a large audience, but was intended to teach mathematics of everyday currency. The Treviso became one of the first mathematics books written for the expansion of human knowledge. It provided an opportunity for the common person, rather than only a privileged few, to learn the art of computation. The Treviso Arithmetic provided an early example of the Hindu-Arabic numeral system computational algorithms."--Wikipedia.

This book intends to present a series of insights coming from in-depth investigation of brain and mathematical cognition in Chinese population. Specifically, the book introduces research on the associations among number sense, visual form perception and mathematical fluency; symbolic and non-symbolic mental number line; and the role of spatial modeling and logical inference in mathematical problem solving. The book summarizes author's previous studies on the involvement of semantic network other than visuospatial network in mathematical cognition. The three-component mathematical model that comes out of more than 10 years of research on mathematical cognition is introduced. The book presents the effect of learning experience on arithmetic-related brain system. Chinese abacus that can be used to eradicate developmental dyscalculia in classroom is briefly discussed. Special attention in this book is paid to mathematical anxiety and mathematical learning disorders in Chinese schoolchildren. Finally, gender differences in mathematical cognition are also reviewed.

Our understanding of how the human brain performs mathematical calculations is far from complete. But in recent years there have been many exciting scientific discoveries, some aided by new imaging techniques--which allow us for the first time to watch the living mind at work--and others by ingenious experiments conducted by researchers all over the world. There are still perplexing mysteries--how, for instance, do idiot savants perform almost miraculous mathematical feats?--but the picture is growing steadily clearer. In The Number Sense, Stanislas Dehaene offers general readers a first look at these recent stunning discoveries, in an enlightening exploration of the mathematical mind. Dehaene, a mathematician turned cognitive neuropsychologist, begins with the eye-opening discovery that animals--including rats, pigeons, raccoons, and chimpanzees--can perform simple mathematical calculations, and he describes ingenious experiments that show that human infants also have a rudimentary number sense (American scientist Karen Wynn, for instance, using just a few Mickey Mouse toys and a small puppet theater, proved that five-month-old infants already have the ability to add and subtract). Further, Dehaene suggests that this rudimentary number sense is as basic to the way the brain understands the world as our perception of color or of objects in space, and, like these other abilities, our number sense is wired into the brain. But how then did the brain leap from this basic number ability to trigonometry, calculus, and beyond? Dehaene shows that it was the invention of symbolic systems of numerals that started us on the climb to higher mathematics, and in a marvelous chapter he traces the history of numbers, from early times when people indicated a number by pointing to a part of their body (even today, in many societies in New Guinea, the word for six is "wrist"), to early abstract numbers such as Roman numerals (chosen for the ease with which they could be carved into wooden sticks), to modern numbers. On our way, we also discover many fascinating facts: for example, because Chinese names for numbers are so short, Chinese people can remember up to nine or ten digits at a time--English-speaking people can only remember seven. Dehaene also explores the unique abilities of idiot savants and mathematical geniuses, asking what might explain their special mathematical talent. And we meet people whose minute brain lesions render their mathematical ability useless--one man, in fact, who is certain that two and two is three. Using modern imaging techniques (PET scans and MRI), Dehaene reveals exactly where in the brain numerical calculation takes place. But perhaps most important, The Number Sense reaches many provocative conclusions that will intrigue anyone interested in mathematics or the mind. Dehaene argues, for instance, that many of the difficulties that children face when learning math, and which may turn into a full-blown adult "innumeracy," stem from the architecture of our primate brain, which has not evolved for the purpose of doing mathematics. He also shows why the human brain does not work like a computer, and that the physical world is not based on mathematics--rather, mathematics evolved to explain the physical world the way that the eye evolved to provide sight. A truly fascinating look at the crossroads where numbers and neurons intersect, The Number Sense offers an intriguing tour of how the structure of the brain shapes our mathematical abilities, and how our mathematics opens up a window on the human mind.

The book is associated with a web page called The Animated Computer - https://sites.google.com/site/illustratedcomputer/ This web page shows animation of the computer designs in action. This web page does well to compliment the book which gives excellent explanations of what the animations are showing. Combining the books explanations with the animation provides a well rounded understanding of the animated computer. This book and web page are about the many hardware and software aspects of computing. It covers the design of circuits, logical gates, data and data storage, counting and arithmetic, buses and bus designs, network connectivity, the CPU and its design, the computers instruction set, the modern use of microprocessing, assembly language and the interpretation of human readable computer code, the activities of the operating system, and computer peripherals. There is a lot to cover so the book is quite intense. The web page offers a new dimension to the book. But it is easy to read; and you can read it at your own pace (unless this is part of a course - then the professor sets the pace). It is meant as a preparation for research, development, design, building, and testing of computer equipment. The book is about how computers and parts of computers are designed and how connecting these part together makes the computer capable of processing internally held instructions that can run the computer independently. This covers how data and instructions are processed, stored, and communicated by computers. This also concerns how data is communicated among electronic components, and how software is written and compiled. Finally - This textbook is a comprehensive work and provides a basis for a detailed understanding of how the computer works. Descriptions include detailed drawings that clarify what the text is talking about. Everyone can read this book as the book is written for easy understanding. But the book is quite detailed in the coverage of computer design issues. I think you will enjoy reading it and it will inform you about computer design as no other textbook can. The book can be easily understood by anyone who takes the time to study each of the diagrams and its description. Dr. Jerome Heath

Elements Of Mathematics written by John Stillwell and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-07 with Mathematics categories.
An exciting look at the world of elementary mathematics Elements of Mathematics takes readers on a fascinating tour that begins in elementary mathematics—but, as John Stillwell shows, this subject is not as elementary or straightforward as one might think. Not all topics that are part of today's elementary mathematics were always considered as such, and great mathematical advances and discoveries had to occur in order for certain subjects to become "elementary." Stillwell examines elementary mathematics from a distinctive twenty-first-century viewpoint and describes not only the beauty and scope of the discipline, but also its limits. From Gaussian integers to propositional logic, Stillwell delves into arithmetic, computation, algebra, geometry, calculus, combinatorics, probability, and logic. He discusses how each area ties into more advanced topics to build mathematics as a whole. Through a rich collection of basic principles, vivid examples, and interesting problems, Stillwell demonstrates that elementary mathematics becomes advanced with the intervention of infinity. Infinity has been observed throughout mathematical history, but the recent development of "reverse mathematics" confirms that infinity is essential for proving well-known theorems, and helps to determine the nature, contours, and borders of elementary mathematics. Elements of Mathematics gives readers, from high school students to professional mathematicians, the highlights of elementary mathematics and glimpses of the parts of math beyond its boundaries.
