The annual International Conference on Access Networks (AccessNets) aims to provide a forum that brings together researchers and scientists from academia as well as man- ers and engineers from industry to meet and exchange ideas and recent work on all aspects of access networks. AccessNets 2008 was the third edition of this event, which was successfully held in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, during October 15–17, 2008. The conference consisted of two keynote addresses, five invited talks, seven technical sessions, and two panel sessions. Leonid Kazovsky from Stanford University and Kevin Schneider, Chief Technology Officer of ADTRAN, delivered their exciting keynote - dresses on “Future Evolution of Broadband Access,” and “Carrier Ethernet and the Evo- ing Access Networks,” respectively. Maurice Gagnaire, Martin Reisslein, Martin Maier, Paolo Giacomazzi, and John M. Cioffi gave interesting invited talks on different research topics on access networks. The technical papers presented original and fundamental - search advances in the area of access networks, while the panels focused on the interesting topics of “Fiber Assisted Wireless for Broadband Access Networks and Dynamic Spectrum Management (DSM) Successes. ” These conference proceedings include all the technical papers that were presented at AccessNets 2008. We hope that it will become a useful reference for researchers and practitioners working in the area of access networks.

With the rapid growth of the Internet as well as the increasing demand for broadband services, access networks have been receiving growing investments in recent years. This has led to a massive network deployment with the goal of eliminating the ba- width bottleneck between end-users and the network core. Today many diverse te- nologies are being used to provide broadband access to end users. The architecture and performance of the access segment (local loop, wired and wireless access n- works, and even home networks) are getting increasing attention for ensuring quality of service of diverse broadband applications. Moreover, most access lines will no longer terminate on a single device, thus leading to the necessity of having a home network designed for applications that transcend simple Internet access sharing among multiple personal computers and enable multimedia support. Therefore, the access network and its home portion have become a hot investment pool from both a fin- cial as well as a research perspective. The aim of the annual International Conference on Access Networks (AccessNets) is to provide a forum that brings together scientists and researchers from academia as well as managers and engineers from the industry and government organizations to meet and exchange ideas and recent work on all aspects of access networks and how they integrate with their in-home counterparts. After Athens in 2006, Ottawa in 2007, and Las Vegas in 2008, this year AccessNets moved to Asia for the first time.

Surprising tales from the scientists who first learned how to use computers to understand the workings of the human brain. Since World War II, a group of scientists has been attempting to understand the human nervous system and to build computer systems that emulate the brain's abilities. Many of the early workers in this field of neural networks came from cybernetics; others came from neuroscience, physics, electrical engineering, mathematics, psychology, even economics. In this collection of interviews, those who helped to shape the field share their childhood memories, their influences, how they became interested in neural networks, and what they see as its future. The subjects tell stories that have been told, referred to, whispered about, and imagined throughout the history of the field. Together, the interviews form a Rashomon-like web of reality. Some of the mythic people responsible for the foundations of modern brain theory and cybernetics, such as Norbert Wiener, Warren McCulloch, and Frank Rosenblatt, appear prominently in the recollections. The interviewees agree about some things and disagree about more. Together, they tell the story of how science is actually done, including the false starts, and the Darwinian struggle for jobs, resources, and reputation. Although some of the interviews contain technical material, there is no actual mathematics in the book. Contributors James A. This year's main conference focused on next-generation wireless and wired broadband networks, sensor networks and emerging applications related to access networks. The main conference received 23 submissions from 15 different countries. After a thorough review process, 9 papers were accepted from the open call, one distinguished researcher was invited to contribute an invited paper and one was invited for a post-deadline submission, yielding 11 technical papers altogether. The 11 technical papers were organized into 4 technical sessions. In addition, four posters were allocated for a poster session during the conference. Within the main program of the conference, two keynote speeches addressed hot topics on emerging trends and focus areas for access networks. The first keynote by Jens Malmodin from Ericsson addressed the energy and carbon footprint of ICT and media services and the second keynote by Peter Szilagyi, Nokia Siemens Networks, addressed self-organizing networks. Collocated together with the main conference of AccessNets 2010 was the First International ICST Workshop on Autonomic Networking and Self-Management in Access Networks (SELFMAGICNETS 2010), which complemented the main conference program with focused coverage on theories and technologies of autonomic networking and self-management. -- from preface.

Net theory is a theory of systems organization which had its origins, about 20 years ago, in the dissertation of C. A. Petri [1]. Since this seminal paper, nets have been applied in various areas, at the same time being modified and theoretically investigated. In recent time, computer scientists are taking a broader interest in net theory. The main concern of this book is the presentation of those parts of net theory which can serve as a basis for practical application. It introduces the basic net theoretical concepts and ways of thinking, motivates them by means of examples and derives relations between them. Some extended examples il lustrate the method of application of nets. A major emphasis is devoted to those aspect which distinguish nets from other system models. These are for instance, the role of concurrency, an awareness of the finiteness of resources, and the pos sibility of using the same representation technique of different levels of ab straction. On completing this book the reader should have achieved a system atic grounding in the subject allowing him access to the net literature [25]. These objectives determined the subjects treated here. The presentation of the material here is rather more axiomatic than in ductive. We start with the basic notions of 'condition' and 'event' and the con cept of the change of states by (concurrently) occurring events. By generali zation of these notions a part of the theory of nets is presented.
