On January 16, 2002, three people lost their lives. One of them was Angela Dales. It happened in Grundy West Virginia, on the campus of the Appalachian School of Law. It wasn't an accident or an act of God, it was premeditated murder. It left everyone, including the author's family, asking "Why?"This book was written for one reason and one reason only: To find the truth and examine the causes that led to the deaths and injuries of January 16, 2002. This book raises the question, "Could this tragedy have been prevented?" The author, David Cariens, says, "Yes," but you have to judge for yourself.

How should we decide a single employee's accountability in a corporation that commits egregious wrongs? What about a single solider fighting in an unjust war? Or a single participant in a lynching? We need a way to make sense of individual moral accountability in cases where multiple individuals are cooperating in a way that results in a wrongful harm. Authority, Cooperation, and Accountability develops a novel strategy for addressing this issue. Saba Bazargan-Forward makes the case for thinking that distinct aspects of human agency, normally wrapped up in a single person, can be 'distributed' practically across different people. He argues that we 'distribute' agency routinely, by forming promises, by making requests, by issuing demands, and by undertaking shared action. The resulting division of agential labour makes possible a distinctive way in which one person can be accountable for the actions of another. Bazargan-Forward highlights that what matters morally is not just our causal contributions to wrongful cooperative activity. In addition, the purposes we confer upon one another can inculpate us as well. The result is an account that can help us make sense of individual moral accountability in a bureaucratized world.

On Killing written by Dave Grossman and has been published by Open Road Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-04-01 with Social Science categories.

A controversial psychological examination of how soldiers’ willingness to kill has been encouraged and exploited to the detriment of contemporary civilian society. Psychologist and US Army Ranger Dave Grossman writes that the vast majority of soldiers are loath to pull the trigger in battle. Unfortunately, modern armies, using Pavlovian and operant conditioning, have developed sophisticated ways of overcoming this instinctive aversion. The mental cost for members of the military, as witnessed by the increase in post-traumatic stress, is devastating. The sociological cost for the rest of us is even worse: Contemporary civilian society, particularly the media, replicates the army’s conditioning techniques and, Grossman argues, is responsible for the rising rate of murder and violence, especially among the young. Drawing from interviews, personal accounts, and academic studies, On Killing is an important look at the techniques the military uses to overcome the powerful reluctance to kill, of how killing affects the soldier, and of the societal implications of escalating violence.

Unprosecuted written by Eric Garrett and has been published by Genius Book Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-25 with categories.

On March 25, 1979, Eric Garrett's 22-year-old mother Paula was murdered, and 4-year-old Eric was left for dead. Within days, there was only one suspect, and the prosecutor declared it an open and shut case. A few short weeks later, however, the case had insufficient evidence to go to trial, despite 27 bags of blood-soaked evidence, witnesses, and the strange, obsessive behavior of the suspect. Over forty years later, no progress has been made. The case is still considered "open" and "ongoing," so no one but the police and the prosecutor can access the evidence, which may exonerate the suspect-or prove his guilt. Eric Garrett, who still bears the scars from that night, wants justice. He wants the suspect to have his day in court, if only so the evidence can be made part of the public record and Eric can know what the police know about his case. Eric's mother deserves justice, and so does his family. There is so much that is unknown about the facts of this case. This book is the only way for his mother's short life to be known, and to keep the story of her murder alive. At one point, everyone knew who did it. It's time for something to be done about it.

Ethics Security And The War Machine written by Ned Dobos and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-07 with Philosophy categories.

If pacifists are correct in thinking that war is always unjust, then it follows that we ought to eliminate the possibility and temptation of ever engaging in it; we should not build war-making capacity, and if we already have, then demilitarization—or military abolition—would seem to be the appropriate course to take. On the other hand, if war is sometimes justified, as many believe, then it must be permissible to prepare for it by creating and maintaining a military establishment. Yet this view that the justifiability of war-making is also sufficient to justify war-building is mistaken. This book addresses questions of jus ante bellum, or justice before war. Under what circumstances is it justifiable for a polity to prepare for war by militarizing? When (if ever) and why (if at all) is it morally permissible to create and maintain the potential to wage war? In doing so it highlights the ways in which a civilian population compromises its own security in maintaining a permanent military establishment, explores the moral and social costs of militarization, and evaluates whether or not these costs are worth bearing.

Complicity And Moral Accountability written by Gregory Mellema and has been published by University of Notre Dame Pess this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-15 with Religion categories.

In Complicity and Moral Accountability, Gregory Mellema presents a philosophical approach to the moral issues involved in complicity. Starting with a taxonomy of Thomas Aquinas, according to whom there are nine ways for one to become complicit in the wrongdoing of another, Mellema analyzes each kind of complicity and examines the moral status of someone complicit in each of these ways. Mellema’s central argument is that one must perform a contributing action to qualify as an accomplice, and that it is always morally blameworthy to perform such an action. Additionally, he argues that an accomplice frequently bears moral responsibility for the outcome of the other’s wrongdoing, but he distinguishes this case from cases in which the accomplice is tainted by the wrongdoing of the principal actor. He further distinguishes between enabling, facilitating, and condoning harm, and introduces the concept of indirect complicity. Mellema tackles issues that are clearly important to any case of collective and shared responsibility, yet rarely discussed in depth, always presenting his arguments clearly, concisely, and engagingly. His account of the nonmoral as well as moral qualities of complicity in wrongdoing—especially of the many and varied ways in which principles and accomplices can interact—is highly illuminating. Liberally sprinkled with helpful and nuanced examples, Complicity and Moral Accountability vividly illustrates the many ways in which one may be complicit in wrongdoing.

It is centred on two case studies: the 1999 events in Rwanda, and the 1999 mayhem in East Timor. The books subjects to testing cross-examination tools to hold accountable persons with „the greatest responsibility" for serious international humanitarian law violations.
