Visual perception is one of the most important sources of information for both humans and robots. A particular challenge is the acquisition and interpretation of complex unstructured scenes. This work contributes to active vision for humanoid robots. A semantic model of the scene is created, which is extended by successively changing the robot's view in order to explore interaction possibilities of the scene.

In this paper, an active vision system is developed which is based on image strategy. The image based control structure uses the optical flow algorithm for motion detection of an object in a visual scene. Because the optical flow is very sensitive to changes in illumination or to the quality of the video, it was necessary to use median filtering and erosion and dilatation morphological operations for the decrease of erroneous blobs residing in individual frames. Since the image coordinates of the object are subjected to noise, the Kalman filtering technique is adopted for robust estimation. A fuzzy controller based on the fuzzy condensed algorithm allows real time work for each captured frame. Finally, the proposed active vision system has been simulated in the development/simulation environment Matlab/Simulink.

KI 2008 was the 31st Annual German Conference on Arti?cial Intelligence held September 23–26 at the University of Kaiserslautern and the German Research Center for Arti?cial Intelligence DFKI GmbH in Kaiserslautern, Germany. The conference series started in 1975 with the German Workshop on AI (GWAI), which took place in Bonn, and represents the ?rst forum of its type for the German AI Community. Over the years AI has become a major ?eld in c- puter scienceinGermanyinvolvinga numberof successfulprojects thatreceived much international attention. Today KI conferences are international forums where participants from academia and industry from all over the world meet to exchange their recent research results and to discuss trends in the ?eld. Since 1993 the meeting has been called the “Annual German Conference on Arti?cial Intelligence,” designated by the German acronym KI. This volume contains the papers selected out of 77 submissions, including a number of submissions from outside German-speaking countries. In total, 15 submissions (19%) were accepted for oral and 30 (39%) for poster presentation. Oralpresentationsattheconferenceweresingletrack. Becauseofthis, thechoice of presentation form (oral, poster) was based on how well reviews indicated that the paper would ?t into one or the other format. The proceedings allocate the same space to both types of papers. In addition, we selected six papers that show high application potential - scribing systems or prototypical implementations of innovative AI technologies. They are also included in this volume as two-page extended abstracts.

The purpose of "Artificial Intelligence Techniques: A Comprehensive Cata logue" is to promote interaction between members of the AI community. It does this by announcing the existence of AI techniques, and acting as a pointer into the literature. Thus the AI community has access to a common, extensional definition of the field, which promotes a common terminology, discourages the reinvention of wheels, and acts as a clearing house for ideas and algorithms. I am grateful to the impressive group of AI experts who have contributed the many descriptions of AI techniques which go to make up this Catalogue. They have managed to distill a very wide knowledge of AI into a very compact form. The Catalogue is a reference work providing a quick guide to the AI tech niques available for different tasks. Intentionally, it only provides a brief de scription of each technique, with no extended discussion of its historical origin or how it has been used in particular AI programs.

Artificial intelligence (AI) robots can learn from their experiences, make decisions in real time, understand natural language and human gestures, and utilize computer vision to perceive and comprehend their environments. Beginning with the rudimentary concepts of AI, AI Robotics: Ethics, Algorithms, and Technology of Artificial Intelligence-Powered Robots explores the intersection of robotics and physics and emphasizes the need for strict adherence to ethical principles in relation to overall progress and the development of humankind. Chapters on robots capable of talking, listening, and visual perception similar to human beings are followed by discussions of those that display emotional intelligence. This book also discusses task and motion planning, a set of methods that help robot hardware achieve high-level goals by breaking down tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. Lastly, the text describes autonomous robots that can make independent decisions and execute tasks on their own, utilizing sensors and AI-enabled software programmed with predefined guidelines and data. Examples of autonomous robots are presented in a chapter on robot swarms that operate in a decentralized, self-organizing manner through local communication to manage disaster relief, search-and-rescue operations, warehouse logistics, agricultural practices, and environmental exploration. Offering an up-to-date, expansive, and comprehensive treatment of the vast interdisciplinary field of AI robotics, this book will be an invaluable resource for postgraduate and doctorate students as well as academic researchers and professional engineers working on AI-enabled robotics. Key Features Explores the research frontiers and advancements leveraged by integrating AIe with robotics Highlights the unique challenges faced in robot vision and speech recognition vis-à-vis computer vision and standard speech processing Provides a state-of-the-art overview of emotional recognition, task and motion planning, and coordinated functioning of robots in multi-robot systems
