Vascular anomalies are abnormalities or disorders of the vascular or lymphatic system, with a relatively higher prevalence in the head and neck region. According to the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA), vascular anomalies are classified as either vascular tumors or malformations. Vascular tumors can be benign, locally aggressive, or malignant; hemangioma is considered the most common type. For benign tumors, hemangioma is divided into infantile and congenital hemangioma; given the onset time, both are endowed with unique natural history. When it comes to locally aggressive tumors, kaposiform hemangioendothelioma and tufted angioma are prone to cause thrombocytopenia among affected infants and children, known as the Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon. Malignant tumors include angiosarcoma, epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, etc. Different from vascular tumors, vascular malformations are mostly occurred before birth. In the light of the hemodynamics, vascular malformations can be sorted into the low-blood flow (capillary malformation [CM], venous malformation [VM], and lymphatic malformation [LM]) and high-blood flow (arteriovenous fistula [AVF] and arteriovenous malformation [AVM]). According to ISSVA, vascular malformations are divided into simple type, combined type, vascular malformations of major named vessels, and vascular malformations associated with other anomalies. Thanks to the significant development of molecular genetics, our understanding of vascular malformations has gradually shifted from a macroscopic level to a microscopic one. Nowadays, congenital gene mutations are the broadly acceptable etiology of vascular malformations, including somatic or germline types. For example, cutaneous or mucosal CM is considered the somatic mutation of GNAQ/GNA11; common VM is caused by somatic mutation of TEK, whereas sporadic AVM results from MAP2K1 somatic mutation. Some genetic diseases, such as hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia or capillary malformation-arteriovenous malformation, happen due to the germline mutation of (ENG, ACVRL1, SMAD4) and (RASA1, EPHB4), respectively.

This book provides cutting-edge information on the epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnostic procedures and treatment approaches for the main white matter (WM) disorders of the central nervous system (CNS). WM lesions are associated with many neurological conditions, and with aging. The diagnostic work-up of neurological diseases characterized by the presence of these lesions has changed dramatically over the past few years. This is mainly due on the one hand to the discovery of specific pathogenetic factors in some of these conditions, and on the order to the optimized use of diagnostic tools. All of this has resulted in new diagnostic algorithms, and in the identification of new neurological conditions. The book offers neurologists essential guidance in the diagnosis and treatment of the most frequent WM conditions, promoting their correct and cost-saving diagnosis and management. By integrating neurological, laboratory and imaging concepts with the demands of accurate diagnosis, this reference guide provides a state-of-the-art overview of the current state of knowledge on these conditions, as well as practical guidelines for their diagnosis and treatment.

The Cerebral Cortex in Neurodegenerative and Neuropsychiatric Disorders: Experimental Approaches to Clinical Issues focuses on how pre-clinical investigations are addressing the clinical issues surrounding the involvement of the cerebral cortex in selected conditions of the nervous system, including Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's, addiction, and cardiovascular dysregulation. Each chapter is written by an expert in his/her field who provides a comprehensive review of the clinical manifestations of cortical involvement and experimental techniques currently available to tackle cortical issues in disease. Thus, this present title provides a link between cortical clinical problems and investigational approaches to help foster future research with high translational value. - Offers a comprehensive overview on the best available in vivo and in vitro models to study cortical involvement - Presents models and specific techniques that help to guide investigators in their choices on how to address research questions experimentally - Provides expert commentary and a perspective on future trends at the end of each chapter - Addresses translational advances and promising therapeutic options - Includes references to key articles for additional detailed study

Geriatric Emergency Medicine written by Joseph H. Kahn and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-01-16 with Medical categories.

As the global geriatric population continues to grow, an increasing proportion of people reporting to emergency departments are elderly. The work-up of these patients uses more time and resources than that of younger patients, and is complicated by the fact that acute disease often presents more subtly, without the outward manifestations typically seen in younger patients. This volume focuses on the unique pathophysiology of the elderly, presenting guidelines for resuscitation, evaluation and management. The first section discusses general principles including demographics, pharmacology and pain management. The following sections cover high-risk chief presenting complaints and review geriatric emergencies. Finally, topics of particular relevance in the geriatric population are discussed, including functional assessment, end-of-life care, financial considerations and abuse. This book provides a comprehensive, practical framework for community and academic emergency medicine practitioners, as well as emergency department administrators striving to improve delivery of care to this vulnerable, growing population.

Head and Neck Vascular Anomalies: A Practical Case-Based Approach is a useful guide to the management of lesions caused by vascular anomalies, providing specific treatment algorithms for their management. This book offers consistent and straightforward techniques to the more frequently encountered and some of the more difficult vascular anomalies. Coming from the world-renowned vascular anomalies center at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, known for its clinical expertise and multi-disciplinary approach, editors Dr. Suen and Dr. Richter have over 40 years combined experience in treating these lesions. With contributed chapters from international leaders in the field, the editors present a practical guide, based upon clinical and scientific evidence, on the approach to diagnosis and management to each vascular anomaly based upon type, extent and location. The book provides a case-based approach to simple and complex lesions. Initial steps for diagnosis followed by a recommended treatment approach is presented with photographs, imaging and step-by-step illustrations to surgical or alternative therapies. All presented information is based upon current literature, providing a timeless and seamless algorithm to each lesion. Each case begins with a diagnostic approach, followed by next best steps to imaging treatment and follow up. This case-based approach is a wonderful quick resource for those physicians in a variety of specialties making clinical decisions. With the increasing number of vascular anomaly centers, and physicians participating in the care of these patients along with the recent advancements and consistency in managing these patients, the timing for this text is ideal.
