Diets rich in plant polyphenols or dietary polyphenols are the subject of increasing scientific interest because of their diverse range of health benefits and medicinal uses. This book, Dietary Polyphenols in Human Diseases: Advances and Challenges in Drug Discovery, fills the gap that exists in the current knowledge by presenting the latest information in the area of polyphenol-based drug discovery research. The book focuses on the current understanding of the beneficial effects on human health of diets rich in polyphenols and/or polyphenolic compounds derived from dietary sources (plant-based foods) and their possible preventive role in the management of chronic human diseases. In addition, biochemical mechanisms involved in the antioxidative effect of dietary polyphenols along with their bioavailability, pharmacokinetic, and toxicological considerations are also discussed herein. Key Features Presents health benefits and medicinal importance of dietary polyphenols having antioxidative effects and their possible preventive role against oxidative stress (OS)-induced chronic human diseases. Summarizes the latest understanding of the biochemical mechanism(s) involved in the antioxidative action of dietary polyphenols along with their bioavailability, pharmacokinetic, and toxicological considerations. Highlights novel approaches of drug discovery from dietary polyphenols through computational screening of bioactive phytochemical components. With contributions by a global team of experts (academics, scientists, and researchers), this book is intended to be a useful resource for a wider audience, particularly those working in the area of drug discovery and development research, such as discovery scientists, pharmaceutical scientists (R&D), formulation scientists, medicinal chemists, pharmacologists, toxicologists, phytochemists, biochemists, clinicians, researchers, students, teachers, and many others.

Drug discovery and quality evaluation are very important for human health. Drugs from chemical synthesis and natural products are a very important branch in drug discovery. The highly efficient synthetic methodology development and pharmacological evaluation of related active agents, as essential steps to developing corresponding innovative drugs, are always research frontiers for organic chemists and medicinal chemists. Meanwhile, the drug quality evaluation is an important guarantee for the clinical application of drugs and the efficacy of drugs. Therefore, we wanted to organize this article collection for the presentation of the high-quality work from internationally recognized researchers to promote academic communication among scientific researchers focusing on medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry. In recent years, the research community has witnessed significant advances in the development of the discovery of novel natural products, design and synthesis of bioactive molecules, synthetic methodology, and drug quality evaluation. Therefore, we hope to be able to summarize and display the latest developments in the design and synthesis of bioactive molecules, synthetic methodologies, the discovery of novel natural products, as well as drugs quality evaluation through the collection of this album, and provide new methods and template molecules for the subsequent development of innovative drug molecules.

"Bio-Farms for Nutraceuticals" can be said to have been born of the NUTRA-SNACKS project within the Sixth Framework Programme Priority on Food Quality and Safety. One objective of NUTRA -SNACK S was to improve the nutritional and eating properties of ready-to-eat products and semi-prepared foodstuffs through better monitoring of the quality and safety of raw materials and the development of innovative processes along the production chain. Another main objective of the project was the production of ready-to-eat snacks with high nutraceutic activity. Seven research institutes and three companies in six European countries were involved in this effort. The co-operation resulted in the production of food having a high content of natural metabolites with the following beneficial health effects: anticancer, antilipidemic, anticholesterol, antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antihypertensive, anti-inflamatory and antioxidant activities.
