The 1985 Castel vecchio-Pas coli NATO Advanced Study Institute is aimed to complete the trilogy with the two former institutes I organized : "Boundary Value Problem for Evolution Partial Differential Operators", Liege, 1976 and "Singularities in Boundary Value Problems", Maratea, 1980. It was indeed necessary to record the considerable progress realized in the field of the propagation of singularities of Schwartz Distri butions which led recently to the birth of a new branch of Mathema tical Analysis called Microlocal Analysis. Most of this theory was mainly built to be applied to distribution solutions of linear partial differential problems. A large part of this institute still went in this direction. But, on the other hand, it was also time to explore the new trend to use microlocal analysis In non linear differential problems. I hope that the Castelvecchio NATO ASI reached its purposes with the help of the more famous authorities in the field. The meeting was held in Tuscany (Italy) at Castelvecchio-Pascoli, little village in the mountains north of Lucca on September 2-12, 1985. It was hosted by "11 Ciocco" an international vacation Center, In a comfortable hotel located in magnificent mountain surroundings and provided with all conference and sport facilities.

The spectral theory of differential operators is a challenging subject with deep connections to many branches of mathematics and mathematical physics. It is a central issue in this volume of Advances in Partial Differential Equations The first contribution addresses domain perturbations for generalized Schr?dinger operators and the influence of the capacity on spectral data. There follows an article discussing the minimal smoothness assumptions on the domain under which the asymptotics of the counting function for the eigenvalues of elliptic boundary value problems can be determined. Systems of h-pseudo-differential operators on the half-line are studied in the next paper. The results concern existence and distribution of resonances for various semi-classical regimes. Three further articles are devoted to the regularity and symptotics of solutions to partial differential equations on singular manifolds. A very efficient tool is the combination of suitable operator algebras and pseudo-differential calculi with sufficiently rich symbolic structures. One paper considers the case of manifolds with non-compact ends, another the case of higher cuspidal singularities. A final contribution treats degenerate hyperbolic equations.

The Fourth Congress of the International Society for Analysis, its Applications and Computation (ISAAC) was held at York University from August 11, 2003 to August 16, 2003. It was supported by the Academic Initiative Fund of the Faculty of Arts, NSERC grants from some members of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Office of the Vice-President Academic of York University. In spite of two SARS outbreaks in Toronto in 2003, the ISAAC Congress was held as scheduled and was well attended by mathematicians from all over the world. There were nine plenary lectures and seventeen special sessions representing most major themes in analysis. Among these were two plenary lectures and a special session on pseudo-differential operators organized by Ryuichi Ashino of Osaka Kyoiku University, Paolo Boggiatto of Universite di Torino and M. W. Wong of York University. In the summer of 2003, M. W. Wong had the idea of putting together the lectures on pseudo-differential operators in a volume to be published in a series that advocates operator theory and its applications. In early August of 2003, when Israel Gohberg of Tel Aviv University was consulted about the possibility of publishing a volume entitled "Advances in Pseudo-Differential Operators" in his series "Operator Theory: Advances and Applications", he replied immediately endorsing the proposal enthusiastically.
