The Fourth Congress of the International Society for Analysis, its Applications and Computation (ISAAC) was held at York University from August 11, 2003 to August 16, 2003. It was supported by the Academic Initiative Fund of the Faculty of Arts, NSERC grants from some members of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Office of the Vice-President Academic of York University. In spite of two SARS outbreaks in Toronto in 2003, the ISAAC Congress was held as scheduled and was well attended by mathematicians from all over the world. There were nine plenary lectures and seventeen special sessions representing most major themes in analysis. Among these were two plenary lectures and a special session on pseudo-differential operators organized by Ryuichi Ashino of Osaka Kyoiku University, Paolo Boggiatto of Universite di Torino and M. W. Wong of York University. In the summer of 2003, M. W. Wong had the idea of putting together the lectures on pseudo-differential operators in a volume to be published in a series that advocates operator theory and its applications. In early August of 2003, when Israel Gohberg of Tel Aviv University was consulted about the possibility of publishing a volume entitled "Advances in Pseudo-Differential Operators" in his series "Operator Theory: Advances and Applications", he replied immediately endorsing the proposal enthusiastically.

In the 19th century, the Fourier transformation was introduced to study various problems of partial differential equations. This book grew out of lecture notes based on the DMV seminar "Pseudo- Differential Operators, Singularities, Applications" held by the authors in Reisenburg-Günzburg, 12–19 July 1992. The modern theory of elliptic boundary value problems in domains having conical or edge singularities on the boundary as well as the classical theory of elliptic boundary value problems and the original Kondratiev theory are presented. This material forms the foundation for the second part of the book which contains a new construction of pseudo-differential operators with symbols corresponding to the singularities of the boundary of different dimensions. This book presents two essential and apparently unrelated subjects. The first, microlocal analysis and the theory of pseudo-differential operators, is a basic tool in the study of partial differential equations and in analysis on manifolds. The second, the Nash-Moser theorem, continues to be fundamentally important in geometry, dynamical systems and nonlinear PDE. This textbook provides a self-contained and elementary introduction to the modern theory of pseudodifferential operators and their applications to partial differential equations. In the first chapters, the necessary material on Fourier transformation and distribution theory is presented. Subsequently the basic calculus of pseudodifferential operators on the n-dimensional Euclidean space is developed. In order to present the deep results on regularity questions for partial differential equations, an introduction to the theory of singular integral operators is given - which is of interest for its own. Moreover, to get a wide range of applications, one chapter is devoted to the modern theory of Besov and Bessel potential spaces. In order to demonstrate some fundamental approaches and the power of the theory, several applications to wellposedness and regularity question for elliptic and parabolic equations are presented throughout the book. The basic notation of functional analysis needed in the book is introduced and summarized in the appendix. The text is comprehensible for students of mathematics and physics with a basic education in analysis.
