Afrofuturism in Black Panther: Gender, Identity, and the Re-making of Blackness, through an interdisciplinary and intersectional analysis of Black Panther, discusses the importance of superheroes and the ways in which they are especially important to Black fans. Aside from its global box office success, Black Panther paves the way for future superhero narratives due to its underlying philosophy to base the story on a narrative that is reliant on Afro-futurism. The film’s storyline, the book posits, leads viewers to think about relevant real-world social questions as it taps into the cultural zeitgeist in an indelible way. Contributors to this collection approach Black Panther not only as a film, but also as Afrofuturist imaginings of an African nation untouched by colonialism and antiblack racism: the film is a map to alternate states of being, an introduction to the African Diaspora, a treatise on liberation and racial justice, and an examination of identity. However, the Afrofuturistic message of a future in which Black people use technology to become leaders is disappointingly scarce. It was not until recently (2018) that Black futurism in the mainstream has attracted eminent attention by the release of Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’, the first mega-budget film directed and co-written by African Americans, with a Black hero, and predominantly Black cast. But how does ‘Black Panther’ invite a reimagining of Blackness to the mainstream media? In this paper, I argue that the film ‘Black Panther’ brought a movement to the mainstream media by creating an alternative to colonialism and exploring an Afrofuturistic narrative of a country that had never been colonized and oppressed. To understand Afrofuturistic themes in ‘Black Panther’, corresponding aspects in the film were analyzed. An underlying objective of this investigation was to emphasize the importance of films influencing the public perception with empowered and positive portrayals of the Black future.

Science fiction film offers its viewers many pleasures, not least of which is the possibility of imagining other worlds in which very different forms of society exist. Not surprisingly, however, these alternative worlds often become spaces in which filmmakers and film audiences can explore issues of concern in our own society. Through an analysis of over thirty canonic science fiction (SF) films, including Logan's Run, Star Wars, Blade Runner, Back to the Future, Gattaca, and Minority Report, Black Space offers a thorough-going investigation of how SF film since the 1950s has dealt with the issue of race and specifically with the representation of blackness. Setting his study against the backdrop of America's ongoing racial struggles and complex socioeconomic histories, Adilifu Nama pursues a number of themes in Black Space. They include the structured absence/token presence of blacks in SF film; racial contamination and racial paranoia; the traumatized black body as the ultimate signifier of difference, alienness, and "otherness"; the use of class and economic issues to subsume race as an issue; the racially subversive pleasures and allegories encoded in some mainstream SF films; and the ways in which independent and extra-filmic productions are subverting the SF genre of Hollywood filmmaking. The first book-length study of African American representation in science fiction film, Black Space demonstrates that SF cinema has become an important field of racial analysis, a site where definitions of race can be contested and post-civil rights race relations (re)imagined.

"Black Panther was the first Black superhero in mainstream American comics, and his titular film was the first in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with a predominantly Black cast. The film broke box-office records and was nominated for numerous awards while also confirming director Ryan Coogler as a rising auteur. Scott Bukatman, a senior scholar in film and comics, examines the character, the film, and the director to understand why this is an essential film. While briefly tracing the history of Black superheroes and the overall history of the MCU to provide context, Bukatman delves into Afrofuturism with the film's (and comic's) depiction of the high-tech African country of Wakanda, the philosophical debate of isolationism that is at the heart of the film, and the larger issues of the African diaspora, showing how the film does not present a consistent ideology but instead raises real-world political questions with a character originally created by two white men in the 1960s. He also examines the role of women in the film and the importance of the characters Shuri, Okoye, Nakia, and Ramonda.
