Afrofuturism in Black Panther: Gender, Identity, and the Re-making of Blackness, through an interdisciplinary and intersectional analysis of Black Panther, discusses the importance of superheroes and the ways in which they are especially important to Black fans. Aside from its global box office success, Black Panther paves the way for future superhero narratives due to its underlying philosophy to base the story on a narrative that is reliant on Afro-futurism. The film’s storyline, the book posits, leads viewers to think about relevant real-world social questions as it taps into the cultural zeitgeist in an indelible way. Contributors to this collection approach Black Panther not only as a film, but also as Afrofuturist imaginings of an African nation untouched by colonialism and antiblack racism: the film is a map to alternate states of being, an introduction to the African Diaspora, a treatise on liberation and racial justice, and an examination of identity. As they analyze each of these components, contributors pose the question: how can a film invite a reimagining of Blackness?

Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Other, grade: 2,0, University of Würzburg, language: English, abstract: This paper deals with Afrofuturism and black ecologies in american films. A survey from October 2017 has shown that almost all of the black people who responded to it (92 percent) said they felt that discrimination against African-Americans exists in America today. Furthermore, at least half said they had personally experienced racial discrimination concerning equal pay, employment, and promotions, or in their encounters with police, but also when going to a doctor or a health clinic. Many of these surveys illustrate the discrimination today of especially African Americans in the United States and hence their dissatisfaction with the political situation in the country concerning the treatment of colored people. Despite the civil rights movement during the 1950s and 1960s, which was a struggle for social justice for blacks to gain equal rights under the law in the United States, discrimination against blacks did not end then (History). Even though the Civil War (1861-1865) officially abolished slavery, African Americans continued to endure the devastating effects of racism, especially in the South (History).

Seminar paper from the year 2022 in the subject Cultural Studies - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0, Free University of Berlin (Englische Philologie), course: Institut für Englische Philologie, language: English, abstract: In most of the mainstream film media - especially in mainstream science fiction - Blackness is related to rather dystopian topics and explores the difficulties that minority groups are facing in the present day. However, the Afrofuturistic message of a future in which Black people use technology to become leaders is disappointingly scarce. It was not until recently (2018) that Black futurism in the mainstream has attracted eminent attention by the release of Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’, the first mega-budget film directed and co-written by African Americans, with a Black hero, and predominantly Black cast. But how does ‘Black Panther’ invite a reimagining of Blackness to the mainstream media? In this paper, I argue that the film ‘Black Panther’ brought a movement to the mainstream media by creating an alternative to colonialism and exploring an Afrofuturistic narrative of a country that had never been colonized and oppressed. To understand Afrofuturistic themes in ‘Black Panther’, corresponding aspects in the film were analyzed. An underlying objective of this investigation was to emphasize the importance of films influencing the public perception with empowered and positive portrayals of the Black future.

This volume gathers scholarship from varying disciplinary perspectives to explore media owned or created by members of the African diaspora, examine its relationship with diasporic audiences, and consider its impact on mainstream culture in general. Contributors highlight creations and contributions of people of the African diaspora, the interconnections of Black American and African-centered media, and the experiences of audiences and users across the African diaspora, positioning members of the Black and African Diaspora as subjects of their own narratives, active participants and creators. In so doing, this volume addresses issues of identity, culture, audiences, and global influence.
