Today’s wholesale lack of trust in our institutions is a problem with deep roots in liberalism, and it cannot be solved by tweaking a liberal paradigm in which different conceptions of the good create conflict that is resolved by a sovereign state without reference to a nonexclusive common good. Ultimately, the essence of liberalism is contained in the language of values which serve as wedges to divide people. Philip J. Harold takes this problem head-on with a thoroughgoing survey, reaching back to the early modern era, to uncover the nature of liberalism’s basic assumptions and diagnose its breakdown. As opposed to traditional liberal denial of a good superior to individual interest, Harold proposes a postliberal political philosophy able to understand the common good as friendship and social trust built up by loyalty. While critiquing values language, Harold also addresses the concept of sovereignty and the invention of morality as its supplement, the inappropriate distinction between the empirical and the transcendental, the true nature of the secular and the sacred, the necessarily symbolic expression of the common good, and the false conceptualization of religion and politics.

Reason And Ethics written by Joel Marks and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-01 with Philosophy categories.

Reason and Ethics defends the theoretical claim that all values are subjective and the practical claim that human affairs can be conducted fruitfully in full awareness of this. Joel Marks goes beyond his previous work defending moral skepticism to question the existence of all objective values. This leads him to suggest a novel answer to the Companions in Guilt argument that the denial of morality would mean relinquishing rationality as well. Marks disarms the argument by conceding the irreality of both morality and logic, but is still able to rescue rationality while dispensing with morality on pragmatic grounds. He then offers a positive account of how life may be lived productively without recourse to attributions and assertions of right and wrong, good and bad, and even truth and falsity. Written in an accessible and engaging style, Reason and Ethics will be of interest to scholars and students working in metaethics as well as to the generally intellectually curious.

There is very little extant research on moral hypocrisy. As such, there are many definitional and theoretical issues that have yet to be addressed. Thus far, there are two working definitions of moral hypocrisy: (a) the motivation to appear moral, but avoid the consequences of behaving morally and (b) the differential evaluation of one's own versus others' moral transgressions. There are also two working theoretical explanations: (a) people deceive themselves into thinking that their immoral behavior is actually moral by suppressing the discrepancy between their behavior and a relevant moral standard and (b) people employ valuable executive resources to suppress negative affect elicited by moral transgressions that violate our moral intuitions. What this research appears to be missing is tied to both definition and theory. Specifically, moral hypocrisy, commonly construed, involves the imposition of standards on others that one does not adhere to oneself. Therefore, investigation and theoretical explanation of moral hypocrisy should focus on the processes involved in how people advise others compared to they decide for themselves. In our study, we adapted the existing paradigm used to study moral hypocrisy to have participants either make decisions for themselves or for another participant (actually a confederate). Unfortunately--or fortunately, depending on how you look at it--we did not find moral hypocrisy with our decision data. However, our questionnaire data enabled us to tease apart some of the aspects of people's decision processes. One of our findings in this regard provided us with a very clear explanation for why we did not find moral hypocrisy. In particular, it is seen as fair and socially appropriate to advise someone to do what is otherwise considered to be unfair and socially inappropriate when deciding for self, at least as it pertains to the particular decision situation.

Against Value in the Arts and Education proposes that it is often the staunchest defenders of art who do it the most harm, by suppressing or mollifying its dissenting voice, by neutralizing its painful truths, and by instrumentalizing its ambivalence. The result is that rather than expanding the autonomy of thought and feeling of the artist and the audience, art’s defenders make art self-satisfied, or otherwise an echo-chamber for the limited and limiting self-description of people’s lives lived in an “audit culture”, a culture pervaded by the direct and indirect excrescence of practices of accountability. This book diagnoses the counter-intuitive effects of the rhetoric of value. It posits that the auditing of values pervades the fabric of people’s work-lives, their education, and increasingly their everyday experience. The book uncovers figures of resentment, disenchantment and alienation fostered by the dogma of value. It argues instead that value judgments can behave insidiously, and incorporate aesthetic, ethical or ideological values fundamentally opposed to the “value” they purportedly name and describe. The collection contains contributions from leading scholars in the UK and US with contributions from anthropology, the history of art, literature, education, musicology, political science, and philosophy.

A distinguished interdisciplinary group of scholars examines the merits and shortcomings of Land-Value taxation, and how it compares and contrasts with the conventional property tax. The latter is shown as deterring enterprise to the detriment of employment and as pushing up the cost of improving property with inflationary consequences. The former, with evidence from places where it is already in use, is shown to encourage optimum land use, foster employment, and prevent urban sprawl.
