Excerpt from World Agriculture, Vol. 53: Situation and Outlook Report; December 1988 Japan's outlook is the brightest among the industrialized countries, with growth expected to reach percent in 1988, and percent in 1989. Rising consumer spending and fixed investment are the main sources. European growth is seen at percent in 1988, fueled by higher investment spending, and much stronger growth in Germany than previously projected. German growth for 1988 is placed at 3 percent on the strength of stronger export performance, particularly in capital goods. In 1989, European growth is seen as slipping somewhat, to near 2 percent. These expectations are guided by the belief that attempts by Germany to narrow its fiscal deficit, and by Italy and the United Kingdom to correct balance-of payments problems, will result in slower growth. Excerpt from Agricultural Situation, Vol. 51: December 1967 Due to declining farm numbers, realized net farm income per farm will likely be higher than in 1967. The per capita disposable income of f arm people from all sources probably will be somewhat higher too. Some improvement will occur in per capita disposable income from farm sources. And, per capita income from nonfarm sources is also expected to be better next year with the economy operating at a high level. Expenses: For the second straight year farm production expenses in all probability will rise by at least a billion dol lars. Such overhead items as taxes, interest, and depreciation charges will be up sharply from 1967. Prices paid by farm ers for production items of nonfarm origin will likely con tinne their persistent rise next year. Some increase in usage of feed and fertilizer appears likely in 1968. The trend toward fewer hired workers will probably continue but higher wage rates will be largely offsetting. Livestock producers will likely turn out about the same amount of red meat next year as they have in 1967. Fed beef production probably will be larger and may about off set a further decline in cow slaughter. The relationship be tween hog prices and com prices probably will encourage large output of pork next year. Reduced lamb and veal pro duction is in prospect for 1968, due to smaller lamb and dairy calf crops. Cattle: Fed cattle marketings during the rest of this fall and through winter likely will continue above a year earlier. The number of cattle on feed at the beginning of 1968 probably will be as large or larger than it was last January, and a continued large supply of f ceder cattle will be available for feedlots. With marketings of fed 'cattle expected to be a little above year-earlier levels and continued strong consumer de mand, fed cattle prices next winter probably will average near fall levels, but above the January - March 1967 average of $25 per hundredweight for Choice steers at Chicago. Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 13: A Brief Summary of Economic Conditions; January 1, 1929 The past season has not been particularly favorable to New England farmers. Most crops have produced only moderate yields and are being sold at only fair prices at best. Potatoes: A total of bushels of potatoes were finally produced in the New England States. This total does not differ materially from the production Of a year ago, and average. A large acreage was planted and yields were comparatively light, however. Much of the potato crop is of poor quality. Potato prices have been unusually low. This is due largely to the fact that the crop for the country, as a whole, is the largest on record, totaling bushels. At present conditions, car-lot movement of potatoes in New England may be expected to fall short of the totals of a year ago, due largely to poor quality and low prices being received for the crop. Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 13: A Brief Summary of Economic Conditions; December 1, 1929 The most noteworthy feature of the egg market during November was its failure to show any evidence of weakness at the time recent interruption of confidence in the general business situation. The failure of egg prices to follow the declines registered in so man other farm products may be attributed very largely to the firm pos1 tion of the trade In relation to current and reserve supplies, both being considerably lighter for the month of November than for the same month of 1928. Production of eggs so far this year has been light, and except for intermittent periods, weekly receipts at the principal markets have reflected this condition by being smaller than for the same period last year. Because of the light production, it has been impossible to accumulate very heavy supplies in storage as reserves against the fall and winter months when current receipts are never sufficient to care for all requirements. Some improvement has been reported in the principal production areas, although such improvement has not as yet had time to influence market conditions to any appreciable extent, as receipts so far this month have been approximately 13 per cent less than for the corresponding period in November, 1928. Prices are ranging around several cents per dozen higher than a year ago, and while this higher selling level has caused some slacken ing up of demand, outlets have been sufficient to absorb the rather restricted offerings with a very close clearance on all grades. The demand for fancy fresh stock has been especially good, and in most cases such eggs have commanded a premium. While some rather sharp advances in prices have occurred Within the past few weeks, indications are that the peak prices for the year have been reached and passed. There may be further advances on top grades, but the major trend from now on should be lower. The cold-storage holdings of eggs continue to Show a shortage as compared with both last year and the 5-year average. According to the November 1 report, eggs in storage on that date amounted to cases, with holdings of 000 cases on the same date a year ago, and a 5-year average of cases. This represents a relative shortage of 1 000 cases under last year and a shortage of cases compared with the 5-year average. The October reduction in storage stocks was somewhat less than was expected by the trade which apparently made no allowance for an increased resistance on the part of buyers as a result of high prices for storage eggs. _owners of such stocks, however, are said to be making no aggressive effort to press sales, being of the opinion that unless receipts of fresh stock increase more rapidly than is expected, the present rate of withdrawals, if continued, will closely clear the larger part of the reserves by the end of the storage season.
