Spätestens seit der heftigen Kontroverse und den diplomatischen Verwerfungen um die Mohammed Karikaturen im Jahr 2007 ist klar geworden, dass die westliche Welt es versäumt hat, alle Bevölkerungsgruppen mit muslimischem Migrationshintergrund adäquat in den westlichen Kulturraum zu assimilieren. Nun werden verschiedenste Lösungswege dieses Problems diskutiert. In diesem Zusammenhang bekommt die seit Jahrzehnten geführte Debatte zur Einführung eines eigenen islamischen Religionsunterrichts neuen Auftrieb. Dieses Arbeit wird sich mit der Situation beschäftigen wie sie sich zur Zeit in Deutschland darstellt, die formalen und materiellen Voraussetzungen für einen islamischen Religionsunterricht untersuchen und auf die damit einhergehenden Problemfragen eingehen, und einen knappen Überblick über die verschiedenen Initiativen in einzelnen Bundesländern zur Einführung eines islamischen Religionsunterrichts geben. Den Abschluss soll ein kurzer Abriss über kurzfristige wie langfristige Perspektiven in dieser Frage stellen.
