English summary: Although the discipline of historical studies has become somewhat less text-intensive as a result of the iconic turn, it nevertheless continues to occupy a sphere that is to a large extent silent. At best, sounds and noises are only addressed as subjects for study once they have been documented in written form; that is, 'translated' into text. This volume investigates these losses in translation and the difference between what people 'hear' when they remember World War II and the 'sounds' that have been written into history. The volume thus pursues aspects of acoustic memory both in its individual and collective forms. Fifteen contributions by German, Japanese, Polish and Russian authors address theoretical questions of sound media and oral history, examining biographies for components reminiscent of sound. They further consider literary documentation and the impact and didactic potential of history's acoustic dimension. Finally, the volume documents the production of an acoustic video clip on World War II. German text. Tone und Gerausche werden bestenfalls zum Untersuchungsgegenstand, nachdem sie schriftlich festgehalten, also in Schrift ubersetzt worden sind. Der vorliegende Band fragt nach den Ubersetzungsverlusten, nach der Differenz zwischen dem, was die Menschen im Ohr haben, wenn sie den Zweiten Weltkrieg erinnern, und dem, was davon von der Geschichtsschreibung aufgegriffen wird. Unwillkurlich nahert sich der Band damit der Frage nach dem akustischen Gedachtnis in seinen individuellen und kollektiven Ausformungen. Funfzehn Beitrage aus deutscher, russischer und japanischer Feder befassen sich mit theoretischen Aspekten, Tontragern, oral history, durchforsten Biographien auf Ton-Reminiszenzen, nehmen literarische Bearbeitungen in den Blick, untersuchen die Wirkungsmachtigkeit und das didaktische Potential der akustischen Dimension von Geschichte. Schliesslich wird die Entstehung eines Akustik-Clips zum Zweiten Weltkrieg dokumentiert.

How can music withstand the death and destruction brought on by war? Global conflicts of the 20th century fundamentally transformed not only national boundaries, power relations, and global economies, but also the arts and culture of every nation involved. Music in World War II explores how music and sound took on radically different dimensions in the United States and Europe before, during, and after World War II. Additionally, the collection examines the impact of radio and film as the disseminators of the war's musical soundtrack. Contributors contend that the European and American soundtrack of World War II was largely one of escapism rather than the lofty, solemn, heroic, and celebratory mode of "war music" in the past. As the seat of Hitler's government, Berlin was the most frequently targeted German city for Allied bombing during World War II.
