Aldeanos urbanos describe la vida de los italoamericanos en el West End de Boston a comienzos de los años sesenta, en un periodo de transición en el que empiezan a manifestarse procesos de movilidad social desde la clase baja hacia la clase media. Mediante un trabajo de campo basado en la observación participante y con gran material proveniente de entrevistas a informadores privilegiados, especialmente a responsables de las instituciones del barrio y a políticos y gestores del ayuntamiento, el autor realiza un exhaustivo estudio de comunidad en el que se describen valores y comportamientos que permiten comprender la relación de la clase baja con las otras clases sociales y en especial la dificultad para defender los intereses de aquella frente a los poderes públicos dominados por la clase media. Según la tesis defendida por Gans, las propias características culturales suponen un cierto retraso en esa movilidad social en relación con otros inmigrantes como serían los irlandeses o los judíos, considerados como un grupo. Para los habitantes del barrio analizado, al igual que para muchos estadounidenses, la comunidad es básicamente un conjunto de personas e instituciones cuyo fin es servir y proteger a la familia y al grupo de iguales. Precisamente el presente título trata sobre esa gran parte de la clase trabajadora que está más volcada en la familia y la comunidad que en el trabajo. Considerada como un clásico en las universidades estadounidenses, Aldeanos urbanos produjo un fuerte impacto sobre los movimientos renovadores del planeamiento urbano, a demostrar la incongruencia de algunas políticas urbanísticas capaces de de destruir un barrio en el que existía una comunidad de la clase trabajadora cohesionada.
