Thinking and talking in everyday life differs from thinking and talking in more formal contexts, and that difference is not always taken into account in social psychology. What is needed is an approach that sets the man and woman in the street as competent actors in their own right, rather than just pinpointing their alleged cognitive shortcomings. This book proposes the theory of Social Representations, which allows us to articulate collective and individual psychological processes, as a solution. The text begins with a general analysis of everyday thinking in psychology, discussing research into socio-political, popular scientific and cultural systems of common-sense. The theory is presented through both classic and contemporary research into the construction of the social world, from the individual level of representations as metaphors, images and cognitive structures, to collective phenomena such as dialogue, discourse and shared understandings. The concluding chapters cover epistemological and methodological developments in the field. This book is the first comprehensive, integrative and book-length treatment of Moscovici's Theory of Social Representations in the English language.

Inhaltsangabe:Zusammenfassung: Die veränderte Bewegungssituation in unserer Gesellschaft geht mit einem veränderten Krankheits- oder Beschwerdepanorama einher, was zu einer nicht unerheblichen finanziellen Belastung unserer Sozialsysteme führt. Sport und Bewegung, im Sinne von gesundheitssportlicher Aktivität, könnten zu einer Entschärfung dieser Situation beitragen. Damit jedoch Sport und Bewegung als wesentliche Faktoren zur Unterstützung in unser Gesundheitssystem integriert werden, ist es erforderlich, vermehrt Wirksamkeitsmessungen vorzunehmen. Neben der Sicherung von Qualitätsstandards bezüglich Programminhalten und Übungsleiterausbildungen, sind es besonders ökonomische Aspekte, wie, trotz aller dabei auftretenden methodischen Probleme, Kosten-Nutzen-Analysen, die zu einer Integration des Gesundheitssports in das Gesundheitssystem beitragen können. Darüber hinaus sollte das Hauptaugenmerk neben der intentionalen Phase vor allem auf motivationale Strukturen hinsichtlich der Drop-out-Problematik gelegt werden. Dazu müssen interdisziplinäre Sichtweisen in die Lösungsansätze einfließen, mit dem Schwerpunkt in den Bereichen Verhaltenspsychologie und Pädagogik. Denn durch die fehlende Anwendung systematischer Verhaltensmodifikation bleibt zumeist eine langfristige Bindung an das Programm aus und somit auch der mögliche Erfolg. Wie schon in den 80er Jahren in den USA geschehen, können Verfahren und Methoden der Verhaltensbeeinflussung und Lerntheorien, wie zur Nikotinentwöhnung, Sicherung von Kontinuität der Medikamenteneinnahme oder Vorsorgeuntersuchung auf den Bereich der Trainingsdurchführung übertragen werden. Die Erforschung der Faktoren einer gesundheitssportlichen Motivationsstruktur und die Möglichkeiten ihrer Beeinflussung durch pädagogische oder motivationspsychologische Maßnahmen wird in einer eigenen Längsschnittstudie erfasst, um Erkenntnisse zu gewinnen, wie die Bindung breiterer Bevölkerungskreise an regelmäßige und dauerhafte sportliche Betätigung erreicht werden kann.
