School shootings - colloquially referred to as school rampages - represent a rare but serious form of targeted violence in schools. This book first presents the causes discussed in current scientific research. In addition to perpetrator characteristics, emphasis is placed on the private and school environment, the influence of mass media, accessibility to weapons, and the consumption of violent media. Secondly, primary and secondary preventive measures are presented, such as profiling, threat assessments and the phenomenon of leaking. And thirdly, the focus is on aftercare in school shootings, the aim of which is to cope with experienced psychotraumatic stress. Together with Dylan Klebold, he committed the Columbine massacre - the worst carnage ever perpetrated by teenagers in the United States. On 18 April, 1999, the two youngsters entered Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, heavily armed. Their arsenal included “two sawn off shotguns, [a] 9mm Hi-Point carbine rifle, [a] TEC-DC-9 semi-automatic pistol and a total of 95 explosive devices.” Regardless of the consequences Harris and Klebold methodically killed their fellow students. A total of thirteen dead and twenty-three wounded people was the sad result of this atrocious act. After the bloodbath the American people wondered why warning signs were not taken serious and how such a bloody deed could take place in a suburban area in Colorado. Even so, the Columbine massacre was not a singular instance, it was the incident that drew attention to school shootings. Before the deadly homicide Eric Harris recorded a message saying “People will die because of me ... It will be a day that will be remembered forever.” Tragically, he was proved right. People all over the world kept the shooting in mind and, in addition to it, the idiom ‘pull a Columbine’ was append to the American encyclopedia. Because of the fatal carnage, people became aware of a big problem in society. There have been heated controversies about the homicides themselves questioning if the legal custodian, violent music, weapons of the shooters or the system of cliques which is part of the normal high school life should be blamed. Also, the aftermaths of the schoolyard shootings and prevention methods which should be introduced were discussed in public. The following paper will give a valuable insight into the topic.

Nachdem jedoch mit den Städten Erfurt, Emsdetten und Winnenden erschreckende Ereignisse mit blutigen Spuren assoziiert werden, steht fest, dass auch in Deutschland Taten dieser Art möglich sind. Die öffentlichen Diskussionen fokussieren den psychischen Zustand, der zumeist männlichen Täter, konzentrieren sich auf deren Medienkonsum, insbesondere die gewalthaltigen Videospiele, und thematisieren den Zugang sowie den Gebrauch von Waffen. Es erweckt den Anschein, als würden die sozialen Voraussetzungen sowie die tatauslösenden Beweggründe der Täter eher außer Acht gelassen werden. Darüber hinaus gewinnt zunehmend die Frage an Bedeutung, warum Jugendliche gerade an Schulen solch tödliche Gewalttaten ausüben. Die nachstehende fachwissenschaftliche Studie thematisiert diese Frage und beschäftigt sich dabei ausschließlich mit Taten, die sich an Schulen ereignen. Es werden entscheidende innere und äußere Beweggründe aufgezeigt, die solche Taten auslösen, um letztendlich feststellen zu können, warum Jugendliche ausgerechnet Schulen als Tatort wählen. Am Ende des Buches werden mögliche Ansätze der Prävention angesprochen um aufzuzeigen, dass es durch bestimmte Maßnahmen möglich ist derartige Gewalttaten zu verhindern.

Ever since the 1990s, school shootings have shocked the public in their brutality, their suddenness, and their inexplicability. While film and literature have played a role in the heated debates about so-called copycat crimes, the growing body of fictionalizations of school shootings has been neglected thus far. However, in a discourse in which the boundaries between fiction and reality are increasingly blurred, this book shows how fiction shapes and structures, challenges and disrupts cultural processes of meaning-making. Hence, for a better understanding of the school shooting phenomenon, the relevance of fiction on all levels of discourse construction requires thorough analysis. This book therefore develops a new approach to the role of fiction for contemporary forms of excessive violence. By combining narrative theory with insights from sociology and other disciplines, it provides the means for apprehending and describing the relevance of fiction for contemporary discourses. Furthermore, it provides exemplary analyses of more specific functions of literary and filmic fictionalizations of school shootings between 2000 and 2016.
