Excerpt from Ampleforth Journal, Vol. 23 Tors have declared their opinion. That nothing has appeared in the course of their investigation to impeach the characters of the Rt Rev. Dr Baines, or Messrs Burgess, Rooker and Metcalfe, yet, as there were matters which required explanation, they are not of opinion that the charges brought against his Lordship and these gentle men were such as to impeach the character of their accusers. It will be advisable to discuss these two statements in detail when I take up the story of the Arbitra tion, or Investigation-as Fr T. Abbot prefers to consider it. For the present it is enough to note that the arbitrators. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Ampleforth Journal, Vol. 25: Autumn, 1919 The literary aspect of a speech is the art of a speech. Some speeches are works of art, and some are not. It says nothing, or almost nothing, for the excellence or the success of a speech that it is a Work of literary art. The object of a speech is to persuade and the persuasiveness of a Speech may evidently depend on a variety of circumstances with which literature, and therefore art, has nothing to do. The Speaker's personal qualities - his voice, his presence, his history and character; the composition of the audience, and its temper the psycho logical moment (in Bismarckian jargon); and a dozen other things, often contribute more to success in speaking than any excellence of composition. When the good Vicar, in Brace bridge Hall, preached his Christmas sermon, he undertook to prove, against the Puritans, that it was right and proper to rejoice at that holy season; the sermon was very learned, very dry, and very tiresome, 'but its effect was most satis factory, for his hearers, as soon as they got out of church set to work to make merry in the most devoted and orthodox fashion. Ronald Knox S Lectures On Virgil S Aeneid written by Francesca Bugliani Knox and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-07-13 with Literary Criticism categories.
This book makes available Ronald Knox's hitherto unpublished lectures on Virgil's Aeneid delivered at Trinity College, Oxford, as part of a lecture course on Virgil in 1912. Written with Knox's customary incisiveness and with frequent allusions to contemporary life, the lectures are devoted to the appreciation of the Aeneid and focus on what he called the 'essential and dominant characteristics' that make up its greatness. They deal with Virgil's political and religious outlook, ideas of the afterlife, sense of romance and pathos, narrative style, sources, versification and appreciation of scenery. His interpretation of the relationship between Dido and Aeneas renders redundant the question, much debated to this day, of whether Aeneas loved Dido, and also portrays Aeneas more sympathetically than is currently fashionable. The additional introductory and critical essays by the contributors place the lectures in their historical and scholarly context, bring out their enduring relevance and illustrate how Ronald Knox's distinctive approach might be still developed to advantage. As Robert Speaight noted in his presidential address to the Virgil Society in 1958, 'many of us who love our Virgil will now understand him better because Ronald Knox loved and understood him so well'.

A unique testimony to modern literature's most celebrated and enduring marriage. 'I first saw Harold across a crowded room, but it was lunchtime, not some enchanted evening, and we did not speak.' When Antonia Fraser met Harold Pinter she was a celebrated biographer and he was Britain's finest playwright. Both were already married - Pinter to the actress Vivien Merchant and Fraser to the politician Hugh Fraser - but their union seemed inevitable from the moment they met: 'I would have found you somehow', Pinter told Fraser. Their relationship flourished until Pinter's death on Christmas Eve 2008 and was a source of delight and inspiration to them both until the very end. Fraser uses her Diaries and her own recollections to tell a touching love story. But this is also a memoir of a partnership between two of the greatest literary talents, with fascinating glimpses into their creativity and their illustrious circle of friends from the literary, political and theatrical world.

Brideshead Revisited harkens back to the perceived 'golden age' prior to World War II. In these halcyon days, Charles Ryder is infatuated with the Marchmains and the rapidly-disappearing world of privilege they inhabit. Enchanted first by Sebastian at Oxford, then by his doomed Catholic family, in particular his remote sister, Julia, Charles comes finally to recognize only his spiritual and social distance from them.

Renishaw Hall written by Desmond Seward and has been published by Elliott & Thompson this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with Derbyshire (England) categories.
Renishaw Hall in Derbyshire has been the seat of the Sitwell family since 1625. Its remarkable story is only matched by that of the family who have dwelled there, and with whose fortunes it has risen and fallen, only to rise again. Edith, Osbert and Sacheverell Sitwell were some of the brightest stars of 1920s literary society. They counted among their friends and acquaintances some of the greatest writers and artists of the age, many of whom came to love the beautiful Renishaw Hall (Whistler and Evelyn Waugh were frequent visitors). In telling the tale of the Sitwells through the centuries, Desmond Seward also takes us on a tour through English history, to the house's restoration at the end of the 20th century, and the return to its former glory as a jewel of British heritage.
