Over the first decade of the new millennium, Zambia's real GDP rose by 80%. Much of this rise came from the mining sector, but a substantial fraction came from the manufacturing sector, whose output rose by 50% in real terms over the decade. This volume provides a detailed account of Zambia's current industrial capabilities. From mining-related industries through general manufacturing, agribusiness and construction, it describes the structure of each of the country's major industries. It provides detailed profiles of fifty leading industrial companies that together represent the frontier of current capabilities in each area of activity. Along the way, it addresses key issues of current interest. Where did the capabilities of Zambia's leading industrial companies come from? How many of these companies came from abroad? How many had their origins in the public sector? And how many were set up by domestic trading companies that began local manufacturing operations? The copper industry generates three-quarters of Zambia's export earnings. But to what extent has Zambia developed downstream capabilities in the manufacture of copper products? How large a role is China playing in the flow of Foreign Direct Investment to Zambia? And in what industries are Chinese companies active? This is the fourth volume in John Sutton's "Enterprise Map" series, which profiles the industrial capabilities of selected countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Volumes on Ethiopia, Ghana and Tanzania have already appeared. The forthcoming fifth volume will be on Mozambique.

In the first decade of the new millennium, Tanzania's gross domestic product doubled in real terms, making it one of the handful of sub-Saharan economies that have shown strong and sustained growth in recent years. This growth was, moreover, broad based, with manufacturing output growing slightly faster than the economy as a whole. To maintain this rate of growth over the next decade, Tanzania's industrial capabilities will need to advance in a quite substantial way. The foundations for this advance lie in the current capabilities of Tanzania's industrial companies. The purpose of this volume is to set out a detailed description, industry by industry, of those capabilities. Along the way, we explore a series of questions. Where did Tanzania's current industrial capabilities originate? To what extent are Tanzanian firms held back by problems of access to land? Will it be possible to successfully integrate Tanzanian companies into the supply chains of the oil and gas sector? This is the third volume in John Sutton's "Enterprise Map" series, which profiles the industrial capabilities of selected countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Volumes on Ethiopia and Ghana have already appeared. The forthcoming fourth volume will be on Zambia.

Academic Paper from the year 2019 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, University of Lusaka (University of Lusaka), course: Economics and Finance, language: English, abstract: This paper analyses the effects of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Zambia. It focuses on two main areas of FDI: First, it looks at the competition effect of Foreign Direct Investment FDI to domestic businesses in the host country, Zambia and the second part looks at how residents perceive Foreign Direct Investment FDI in Zambia. In order to understand the competition effect of FDI in Zambia, the research study carried a survey on local business houses to get an understanding of how FDI with respect to foreign businesses has created competition to local businesses to their detriment. In addition, the research study conducted interviews with various people in Zambia to collect data and get their perception on FDI with respect to foreign businesses in Zambia. This research found that people's perceptions over FDI are more negative than positive. This research study also found that Foreign Direct Investment FDI has both positives and negatives externalities in Zambia. Under positive externalities, FDI has helped create employment to local people, facilitated the transfer of technology and innovation as FDI spillovers. However, under negative externalities, this research found that FDI had brought more competition to local businesses in the host country, throwing many out of business. In addition, some businesses found it difficult to compete due to unfairness created by state interventions. Therefore, FDI in Zambia was found to have more negatives than positives externalities.

Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, University of Lusaka (University of Lusaka UNILUS), course: Economics and Finance, language: English, abstract: This research study has analyzed the effects of foreign aid in promoting economic growth in Zambia. The study used available data in Zambia from 1986 – 2018. The study adopted the ARDL model for investigating the short and long time relationship between foreign aid and Gross Domestic Product GDP. The hypothesis of foreign aid having an effect on economic growth was explored and examined. This study sought to archive the following objectives: To establish whether there is a connection between foreign aid and economic growth in Zambia and determine whether foreign aid significantly contributed to Zambia’s economic growth in the period under review. For policy implications, this study also analyzed the determinant of economic growth in Zambia over the same period. The results clearly revealed a positive relationship between foreign aid and Zambia’s economic growth in a given period that was under investigation. The findings in this study affirm that foreign aid may be important in promoting economic growth. This study also asserts that foreign aid may be effective in improving the quality and lives of people if used effectively. Thus, the outcome of this study recommends that foreign aid be directed towards the promotion of investment because its proper use can promote and boots the country’s economic growth. For policy implications, this study also found that independent variables such as Foreign Direct Investment FDI, Population Growth, Government Expenditure and Consumer Price Index as important and determinants of economic growth in Zambia over the same period. Thus, this study found that important drivers of economic growth included foreign aid inflow, population growth, investment whilst government expenditure and inflation affected GDP negatively, thus their impact was insignificant and negligible. This study furthers found efficiency and effectiveness of programs by government supported by foreign aid being effective to promote growth, hence, the reason why it is important for traditional donors to support government in many sectors.

Ghana's economy has grown rapidly over the past decade, and the goal of becoming a middle-income country in the fairly near future now seems attainable. The likely contribution of the oil sector makes the goal look all the more achievable. Yet this goal is unlikely to be attained without a substantial advance in Ghana's industrial capability. This is therefore a good moment to ask some questions. What are the current capabilities of Ghanaian firms? Where did those capabilities come from? Can the development of the oil sector lead to a parallel advance in related local industries? This volume presents the first general overview of Ghana's industrial sector. Each industry is profiled in detail, and the history and capabilities of leading firms are explored at length. ------------------ This is the second volume in John Sutton's "Enterprise Map" series, which profiles the industrial capabilities of selected countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The first volume was on Ethiopia and the forthcoming third volume will be on Tanzania. Further volumes in this series will appear in due course.
