Essays and portraits on the career and influence of curator Hans Ulrich Obrist. Hans Ulrich Obrist is the Kim Kardashian of the art world. That sounds absurd to those of you who know him. But there are many who know just his name or just his initials, HUO. This book is here to tell you more. What does it mean to be HUO? What does it mean to be a curator? Is there anything less interesting to me (or you?) than selecting artists for exhibitions? In an era of, let's call it, “boutique” art shows, the issue seems about as relevant as Diet Coke (and the Kardashians). But if anything, Hans is the Real Thing. Hans is Coca-Cola. In this book you'll find personal, anecdotal remarks on HUO's character, republished texts, and portraits (by artists including Alex Katz) that give context to the questions that frame the book: “Who is HUO?” and “What does HUO do?” More so, “What has he done?” If the art world were to seek out a supreme leader who was benevolent, kind, and fair, HUO would be it. Simone Fattal written by Hans-Ulrich Obrist and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-10-01 with Art categories.

Hans Ulrich Obrist leads readers into the world of path-breaking Syrian artist Simone Fattal in this intensely personal volume. For over five decades, Simone Fattal (b. 1942, Damascus) has eschewed any singular form or subject in her wide-ranging practice. In this deeply personal volume, Fattal’s close friend and confidante Hans Ulrich Obrist delves into the artist’s past to explore the remarkable breadth of her body of work. After studying philosophy, first in Beirut and then Paris, Fattal returned to Beirut in 1969 and began life as a painter—creating sensuous abstract works that diverged from the predominantly figurative paintings commonly exhibited in Lebanon at the time. In 1980, after a decade spent in Lebanon as a painter, Fattal fled the civil war, abandoned her painting practice, and settled in Sausalito, California, where she founded the revolutionary publishing house Post-Apollo Press. In 1988, after studying sculpture in San Francisco, Fattal was consumed by another wave of creativity that led her to pursue ceramic sculptures—a medium in which she continues to work to this day from her studio in Paris. Alongside prose and interviews with Fattal by Obrist, a foreword by Dr. Omar Kholeif situates Fattal’s early practice in the broader schema of art to emerge in West Asia, while an afterword by Rasha Salti delves into the influence of European and Arabic mythology on Fattal’s artmaking. The Hospitality Of Presence written by Daniel Birnbaum and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Phenomenology categories.

Daniel Birnbaum¿s The Hospitality of Presence is a study of the concept of otherness in Edmund Husserl¿s phenomenology. In the late 1990s it gained international attention in academic circles. It was reviewed favorably in specialized philosophy journals such as Review of Metaphysics and quoted extensively, most notably by Paul Ricoeur in one of the legendary French thinker¿s last books. It has long been out of print. Birnbaum¿s study explores Husserl¿s theory of temporality and his conception of the Other. The reason for examining these two issues together is that they appear to be closely related and that they illuminate not only each other but also phenomenology¿s understanding of what it is to be a subject. In opposition to the commonly held view that the idea of a ¿decentered¿ and open subject has developed subsequently to and partly as a critique of Husserl¿s position, this study endeavors to show that his notion of subjectivity is based on a highly sophisticated notion of alterity. The book provides a theoretical framework to Birnbaum¿s more aphoristic essay Chronology (2005, new edition 2007). Daniel Birnbaum who has written extensively about contemporary art from a theoretical perspective has, since more than a decade, a close working relationship with Danish artist Olafur Eliasson who has produced a special project for this new edition. The book also contains a preface by Hans Ulrich Obrist, a ¿speculative note¿ on the limits of phenomenology by philosopher Sven-Olov Wallenstein and a new introduction by the author.

Hide Seek written by Jonathan D. Katz and has been published by Smithsonian Institution this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-11-02 with History categories.

An entirely new interpretation of modern American portraiture based on the history of sexual difference. Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture, companion volume to an exhibition of the same name at the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, traces the defining presence of same-sex desire in American portraiture through a seductive selection of more than 140 full-color illustrations, drawings, and portraits from leading American artists. Arcing from the turn of the twentieth century, through the emergence of the modern gay liberation movement in 1969, the tragedies of the AIDS epidemic, and to the present, Hide/Seek openly considers what has long been suppressed or tacitly ignored, even by the most progressive sectors of our society: the influence of gay and lesbian artists in creating American modernism. Hide/Seek shows how questions of gender and sexual identity dramatically shaped the artistic practices of influential American artists such as Thomas Eakins, Romaine Brooks, Marsden Hartley, Georgia O'Keeffe, Charles Demuth, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Andrew Wyeth, Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe, and many more—in addition to artists of more recent works such as Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Glenn Ligon, Catherine Opie, and Cass Bird. The authors argue that despite the late-nineteenth-century definition and legal codification of the “homosexual,” in reality, questions of sexuality always remained fluid and continually redefined by artists concerned with the act of portrayal. In particular, gay and lesbian artists—of but not fully in the society they portrayed—occupied a position of influential marginality, from which vantage point they crafted innovative and revolutionary ways of painting portraits. Their resistance to society's attempt to proscribe them forced them to develop new visual vocabularies by which to code, disguise, and thereby express their subjects' identities—and also their own. Bringing together for the first time new scholarship in the history of American sexuality and new research in American portraiture, Hide/Seek charts the heretofore hidden impact of gay and lesbian artists on American art and portraiture and creates the basis for the necessary reassessment of the careers of major American artists—both gay and straight—as well as of portraiture itself.

Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Curating written by Hans-Ulrich Obrist and has been published by National Geographic Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-04-01 with Art categories.

Everything you ever wanted to know about Hans Ulrich Obrist but were afraid to ask has been asked by the sixteen practitioners in this book. Spanning the beginning of his “career” as a young curator in his Zurich kitchen to his time most recently as the Co-Director of Exhibitions and Programs, and Director of International Projects at the Serpentine Gallery in London, the book is a “production of reality conversations.” It undertakes the impossible: pinning down this peripatetic curator, attempting to map his psychogeography so that silences may be transcribed. In a sense, it organizes a “protest against forgetting” and affirms the sagacity of an artist who told this dontstop curator “don't go” when he “contemplated leaving the art world” for other fields—“to go beyond the fear of pooling knowledge”—in lieu of bringing other fields into the (then) hermetic art world.
