The importance of intellectual property (IP) for the global economy continues growing: from the objectives of promoting technology transfer to the concerns regarding access to vaccines and treatment in pandemic times, from the goals of integrating national industries into global chains of value to the need for the protection of entrepreneur’s differentiating intangible assets in their struggle to succeed in competitive markets, IP acquires great relevance in the design of governments’ public policies as well as in the business strategies of inventors and creators. This book, elaborated as a collective effort by the experts of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)’s and the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV)’s International Bureaus, constitutes an indispensable guide that, in a simple, objective and yet thorough manner, will orient the reader through the maze of legal, economic and political topics that constitute today’s IP. Among the vast array of theoretical and practical aspects of IP covered by this book are the following: discussions on the real nature and function of IP and its relation with competition law; a summary of the concepts and the application of most of the many branches of IP, including the analysis of areas not yet fully explored, such as IP in space activities and the interface of IP with artificial intelligence; and recent negotiation processes in WIPO and their outcomes, such as the new treaties on genetic resources and traditional knowledge, as well as the Riyadh Treaty on industrial designs. The concepts explained in the updated edition of this book will be especially welcomed by professionals who need to have a consolidated source on the doctrine and practice of IP on which they can rely. Moreover, in general, this third edition will prove enormously useful for corporate counseling, IP practitioners, government officials, IP agents, students and academics.

This book considers the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the realisation of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Although efforts towards the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals are ongoing, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on these efforts: accentuating inequities, as well as absorbing resources. This book addresses this impact, as it takes up the question of how to ensure global recovery – in line with the target for the Sustainable Development Goals – after the pandemic. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, but focusing particularly on the role of law and legal frameworks in this recovery, the book considers the effect of the pandemic on key industries such as shipping, insurance, manufacturing, and banking, as well as on the role of the State and non-State actors. Pursuing an explicitly Global South perspective, the book maintains that in the post-COVID era it is the elaboration a rule of law framework that is in sync with both the Global North and South that is crucial if the Sustainable Development Goals are to be achieved. This book will be of value to scholars, students and policymakers working in the general area of law and development, but especially those with specific interests in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Faced with evolving trade and health dynamics, this book presents a historical, conceptual, and empirical examination of public health and medical procurement in international trade law at a time of emergency. The work argues that the current trade framework is outdated and must be redesigned to suit the new needs of the 21st century. It identifies critical problems within the current international trade system that prevents it from effectively responding to pandemics, as well as to the emerging digital economy. Based on the analysis, the study puts forward specific suggestions to upgrade the current trade rules framework to prepare for future international public health emergencies and further digitalization of health services. The book will be a valuable resource for academics, researchers and policy-makers working in the areas of International Trade Law, Public Health Law and Medical Law.

This landscape report on the current status of activities related to medical countermeasures (MCMs) for pandemic response underscores the urgent need for action in this critical area. From bolstering research and development to diversifying manufacturing capacities, coordinating global procurement efforts, ensuring equitable allocation approaches for these lifesaving interventions, and making sure arrangements are in place so that they reach the very last mile and enable appropriate use by those in need, the journey toward pandemic preparedness traverses a multifaceted landscape. Yet, despite the progress made, critical gaps in MCM-related aspects remain, and vulnerabilities urgently need to be addressed. This report explores scientific advancements and ongoing or planned activities in the field of MCMs. While there is much progress to note and acknowledge, it is evident that significant work remains to strengthen our abilities to prepare for and respond to pandemics. Moreover, no single entity can tackle this monumental task alone. A network of networks is needed, wherein collaboration and coordination among regional and global health actors are strengthened, ensuring a coherent, streamlined, and accountable approach to pandemic preparedness. This report emphasizes the importance of collective effort in navigating the complex landscape of medical countermeasures and enhancing global health security.

"How do changes in international organizations (IOs) come about? How do IOs respond to crises and unforeseen needs of their members? What role do the secretariats and their heads play in doing so? This volume describes how IOs, their secretariats and executive heads launch and implement innovative activities-initiatives-and adapt to respond to crises, members' demands, internal impulses, or interactions with the outside world. It brings together distinguished scholars and experienced practitioners of IOs to showcase and investigate IOs' adaptive capacity, their achievements, and limitations. Through case studies and conceptual frameworks, the book explores a largely uncharted world of IO evolution in which the international secretariats contribute importantly to adapting the role of the IGO. The volume brings to light the mechanisms used by IOs to adapt to what were, on each occasion, new challenges to their efforts to assist and respond to unprecedented needs of members faced with contemporary realities"--
