It is a great honor to provide an introduction for Dr. Frank Op 't Eynde's and Dr. Willy Sansen's book "Analog Interfaces for Digital Signal Processing Systems". The field of analog integrated circuit design is undergoing rapid evolution. The pervasiveness of digital processing has considerably modified the micro-system architectures: the analog part of complex mixed systems is more and more pushed at the boundary limits of the processing chain. Moreover, the increased performance of digital circuits, in terms of accuracy and speed, are making the specification requirements of analog circuits very strict. In addition to this, the technology, supply voltage and power consumption of analog circuits must be compatible with those, typical for digital circuits. Therefore, in a few words, analog circuits are becoming complex and specialised interfaces between the real world and digital signal processing domains. This technological evolution should be accompanied by an equivalently fast evolution in designer competencies. Knowledge of complicated signal handling should be quickly replaced by know-how of simple but very accurate and very fast signal processing and a solid background in data conversion techniques. All of this through the use of the CMOS (and possibly BiCMOS) technology.

Analog-to-digital (A/D) and digital-to-analog (D/A) converters, or data converters in short, play a critical role as interfaces between the real analog world and digital equipment. They are now indispensable in the field of sensor networks, internet of things (IoT), robots, and automatic driving vehicles, as well as high-precision instrumentation and wideband communication systems. As the world increasingly relies on digital information processing, the importance of data converters continues to increase. The primary purpose of this book is to explain the fundamentals of data converters for students and engineers involved in this fascinating field as a newcomer. The book will also help students who have learned the basics of analog circuit design to understand the state-of-the-art data converters. It is desirable for readers to be familiar with basic analog IC design and digital signal processing using z-transform.

Some examples have been presented of BiCMOS circuit design in mixed signal ASICs. It is by no means an exhaustive list. Many cells have not been mentioned, including 300MHz CMOS Video DACs, 20 Bit Sigma-Delta ADCs, Real-time and Switched-Cap Filters, Line Drivers and Receivers and many more. References. The knowledge of the application specific environment and of the function of the ASIC can be used advantageously to lower the cost and to enhance the performance at all levels of design. Several examples of this cost improvement and performance enhancement at device, circuit and system level are shown.
